Brookville – A 27-point fourth quarter propels Redbank Valley into the District 9 title game for the third consecutive season.
Redbank Valley has had a season of ups and downs. The Bulldogs began the season 3-4. Now, a sudden 5-game winning streak has them in position to compete for the District 9 crown again.
“When we started 3-4, I don’t think anybody thought we’d get here,” said Redbank Valley head coach Blane Gold. “At the same time, you can’t ignore the differences in schedules between the two schools. When the dust settled, we played the 4A champ, the 3A champ, and when you look at three of those four losses to Punxsutawney, Brockway, and Port Allegany. Those three soild football teams. We said, here’s our chance to prove, in our opinion, that it was a fluke the first time around and win today.”
One of those losses came 26-22 to Union/A-C Valley on August 28th in Rimersburg.
Thanks to Braylon Wager, the Bulldogs didn’t see their season end at the hands of the Falcon-Knights the second time through.
“Braylon had a lengthy apology after that first game,” said Gould. “He took 100% responsibility for that. His mentality has grown so much that he feels like even if he had played average, we would’ve won that football game. At halftime, it wasn’t going well, either. I told him to remember that week two apology. He carried us, there’s no doubt about that. I can’t say enough about him.”
On Saturday afternoon in Brookville, they found themselves trailing 21-20 with just over three minutes to play.
Faced with a 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Quarterback Braylon Wagner scrambled around, threw back against the grain to Carson Gould for a 1-yard touchdown with 3:23 that capped a 7-play 61-yard drive that turned into the winning score.
“Honestly, I don’t know what the play was; that was pure Braylon Wagner,” said Gould. “He completely improvised, saw Carson in the back, and he threw it there. It worked for us today, but he knows we tried that against Port Allegany last year, and it went 80 yards the other way. He came over to the sideline right away and said Thank God Tristan Kiser wasn’t over there. He’s 50/50 on that play. That wasn’t what we called, but that was all him; he won the game for us.”
Earlier in the drive, Wagner connected with Gould on a 43-yard gain.
From there, the Bulldogs’ defense forced a turnover on downs on four straight plays. Wagner then ran five straight times, including a 14-yard touchdown run with 1:04 to play.
In the closing seconds, Wagner added an interception of Andrew Kifer for the cherry on top.
“This goes back to week two when they beat us by four points and celebrated like they won the Super Bowl,” Wagner said. “We really took that into consideration, and I think we played well today.”
Braylon Wagner was near perfect in the second half as the Bulldogs completed 11 of 13 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 65 yards and a score on the ground, all in the final 24 minutes.
“Their defense is pretty stout, let’s be honest,” said Wagner. “We had to look at different ways to attack their defense. Then we just started scoring points. It felt bad in the locker room, and we really wanted to put up more points. We started focusing more, and then started scoring. We switched a few things up and then started making plays.”
Union/A-C Valley had taken the second half kickoff and went on a 16-play 55-yard drive that ate up over eight minutes of game clock when Logan Skibinski hammered home a 4th-and-goal rush with a 1-yard run, giving the Falcon-Knights a 13-8 lead following a failed two-point conversion.
The Bulldogs then went on their extensive drive, marching 80 yards in 11 plays, scoring on Wagner’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Easton Magagnotti early in the fourth quarter.
Two plays later, the Falcon-Knights did move back in front when Aidan Fox caught a screen pass from Kifer and raced 68 yards for a touchdown, but by that point, it was pretty clear there was no stopping the Bulldogs’ offense.
Redbank Valley quickly pulled to within a point on Jaxon Huffman’s 1-yard touchdown run following a 5-play 70-yard drive. Wagner’s 40-yard completion to Magagnotti set up the score.
For the game, Braylon Wagner accounted for 428 yards of offense, completing 20 of 31 passes for 326 yards, three touchdowns, and also went over the century mark on the ground with 102 rushing yards on 24 carries and a score.
It was a Wagner to Huffman 8-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter that gave the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead that they would take into the locker room. Wagner connected with Wyatt Byers for a 60-yard gain on that drive.
The Falcon-Knights drew first blood when Andrew Kifer connected with Parker Bish on a 23-yard touchdown pass at the 2:39 mark of the opening quarter.
Kifer completed 8-of-16 passes for 135 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. Union/A-C Valley also got 87 rushing yards from Logan Skibinski.
Redbank Valley advances to the District 9 final, where they’ll again meet Port Allegany. The Gators beat the Bulldogs 62-28 in last year’s final tilt before Port Allegany advances all the way to the state championship.
The Gators beat the Bulldogs 36-6 on September 19th.
