Williams Valley runs wild on Pen Argyl Saturday night to earn a spot in district final

Behind the combined effort of Brady Shomper and Fletcher Thompson, the duo rushed for nearly 300 yards in a dominating victory over Pen Argyl.

WILLIAMSTOWN- The Williams Valley Vikings used a stout ground attack Saturday night at Vikings Stadium, the duo also scored six touchdowns combined, with Shomper picking up four alone for a convincing 49-14 win over Pen Argyl Green Knights, in a District XI 2A semifinal.

As a team the Vikings out-gained the Green Knights 347-146 via the ground game,quarterback Shomper led the way with 18 carries for 167 yards and 4 scores, Thompson ran the ball 7 times for 168 yards and the two scores. Shomper also threw for 105 yards and one touchdown pass. The Vikings defense also held Pen Argyl to just 209 yards of total offense.

Williams Valley opened up the game on a 60 yard 10 play drive culminating in a one yard Shomper score at the 7:34 mark of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead after Sage Smeltz connected on the point-after.

Pen Argyl would, even the score, also on a 1 yard run by their quarterback Mason Soos dove in from a yard out with eight minutes left in the second quarter. Soos had 31 yards rushing in the game on 11 rushes.

Two minutes later Shomper would score on a 16 yard burst up the middle, the PAT was blocked leaving the score at 13-7. The drive began at the Knights’ 49 and took just five plays to complete.

Thompson would get his first score of the night on a 8 yard run with just 1:36 left before intermission, Trevor Bair converted the two-point conversion to make it 21-7 going into the locker room.

After a shanked punt by Pen Argyl on their opening drive of the second half gave the Vikings great field position at the Knights’ 37. Thompson would the rip off a 35 yard run to the Pen Argyl two. Thompson capped off the two-play drive with another touchdown with 8:08 left in the quarter after a missed extra-point leaving the score 27-7

Lucas Lerch then took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 52 yards. A half-dozen plays later Caiden Faust went around left end for a five yard yard score to make it 27-14. Foust finished the season with 11 touchdowns and over 1,100 yards rushing.

Thompson had a nice 27 yard kickoff return himself to near the fifty yard line. Shomper then found room around the outside and scored from 48 yards out. Thompson scored on the two-point try to make it 35-14 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.

Pen Argyl, then turned over the ball on downs, after failing to convert a fourth down attempt. An eight play Williams Valley drive culminated with another one yard Shomper score that made it 42-14.

A 29 yard touchdown pass from Shomper to Kian Krzyzanowski with 7:27 left to play in regulation would close out the scoring. It was Krzyzanowski’s 17th receiving touchdown on the season a new-school record.

Williams Valley (11-1) will now face rival Schuylkill Haven next week at Blue Mountain High School for the District championship. The Hurricanes are 11-1 and drubbed Executive Education Charter Saturday night 53-14. Schuylkill Haven is coached by Mike Farr.
