Williams Valley Wins Back to Back District XI Championships Against Schuylkill Haven

Williams Valley quarterback Brady Shomper runs for a first down

The Williams Valley Vikings claimed the District XI 2A Championship over the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes for the second season in a row. Kian Krzyzanowski scored two touchdowns for the Vikings. Brady Shomper and Blazer Lords each scored as well. Niko Carestia scored both Hurricane touchdowns.

Schuylkill Haven elected to receive to start this championship game, but they could not convert on their first possession. Fletcher Thompson started hot for the Vikings with a quick gain of 22 yards. Quarterback Brady Shomper added 12 yards on the next drive, but Triston Davis was a force on the Hurricane defense, picking up a tackle for loss. The Vikings were able to convert on 4th and 3, but could not reach the endzone. Wyatt Keefer tallied a sack for the Hurricanes, and this game was scoreless at the end of the first.

Leyden Hertz hauled in a long pass by Shomper in for an interception in the endzone to start the action of the second quarter, but the Hurricanes were stuffed by the Viking defense. Shomper found Krzyzanowski for a gain of 11, then Evan Achenbach for a gain of 42. Adam Balulis was able to deflect a touchdown pass for the Hurricanes, but Blazer Lords scored a 21-yard touchdown with just seconds remaining to put his team up 7-0 at the half.

The Hurricanes kicked off to begin the second half. Shomper converted on 4th and 1, then broke a few Hurricane tackles and scrambled to the endzone for a Viking touchdown. The Hurricanes responded, Hertz returning the kick to the Viking 35, setting up Carestia for a touchdown. Krzyzanowski tiptoed down the sideline to stay in bounds before taking off for a 60-yard touchdown to extend the Viking lead. Trevon Bair made an impact on defense for the Vikings with a tackle for a loss of seven. The third quarter ended with the Vikings up, 21-7.

The Hurricane defense came out aggressive in the fourth, Triston Davis with another tackle for loss, as well as multiple tackles from Chase Williams and Wyatt Keefer. The Vikings were stopped on offense, but Evan Achenbach was able to pick off a wild pass before the Hurricanes could work downfield. Krzyzanowski snagged a pick of his own on the Vikings next defensive possession, taking it to the house for a touchdown, sealing the victory for Williams Valley. Sage Smeltz was 4/4 on extra points for the night. Quarterback Brayden Fasnacht was able to find Carestia in the endzone for a Hurricane touchdown, but it was too late for Schuylkill Haven to make any kind of run for the gold. The final score of the District XI 2A Championship game was 28-13, Williams Valley.

Head Coach Mike Farr and his Hurricanes finish with a record of 11-2 on the season, 9-0 in their conference. Head Coach Stephen Sedesse and his Vikings will face the winner of Riverside vs. Lansdale Catholic in the state quarterfinals.
