New Wilmington – Wilmington took advantage of three turnovers and pitched a 42-0 shutout of Reynolds Saturday night at Terry Verrelli Stadium.

After suffering a disappointing 44-7 setback to Farrell last Friday night, the Greyhounds bounced back with a dominating victory over previously unbeaten Reynolds.

“All week long, coming out to work, coming out to practice, we’ve really been eager to get back on the field. Obviously, we weren’t happy with our performance last Friday, but I give the kids credit; they stayed focused on their vision,” said Wilmington head coach Brandon Phillian. “They came to practice with the right mindset, the right mentality. They worked hard. I was glad to see that hard work came through and paid off tonight.”

The Greyhounds’ defense led the way with three interceptions, along with holding Mercer County’s top-ranked rushing attack to only 105 yards.

In fact, it was the “Hound’s Hammer” that basically opened the scoring when the Raiders were facing a 4th-and-1 at their 39-yard line to begin the game.

The Greyhound defense stuffed Parker Nay for a 2-yard loss, and on their first offensive snap, Freddie Zehetner raced 37 yards for a touchdown.

“Coach Mull does a great job,” Phillian said. “These Reynolds Raiders make no mistake. That was a very, very good football team. Tonight, I think we were able to establish some momentum early. We had a big stop on fourth down, then converted with a touchdown. On our fourth down at the goal line, we also converted. So we were able to get some of that momentum early.”

Early in the second quarter, quarterback Rowan Miller capped an 18-play 89-yard drive that ate up 9:02 of game clock with that 1-yard run on 4th-and-goal.

Only 12 seconds later, Cael Kettering scored on a 4-yard run set up by Wesley Vas-Gal’s interception on the Raiders’ ensuing snap.

Reynolds went on a 16-play 72-yard drive, but came up empty when Xavier Zachrich threw incomplete on fourth down with 34 seconds to play in the half.

Wilmington led 21-0 at halftime.

The ‘Hounds quickly put the mercy clock into effect in the third quarter as Michael Mistretta scored on an 18-yard run, capping a 4-play 65-yard drive.

A little less than two minutes later, Cael Kettering intercepted a pass and ran it back 18 yards for a touchdown, putting Wilmington ahead 35-0 with 8:19 to play in the third quarter.

“We did well tonight, Cael Kettering said. “We’ve been working our butts off every day in practice. All these reps are what we’ve needed. On that interception, Coach Casey called the right defense at the time, I got the blocks I needed and scored.”

Reynolds would drive into the red zone one final time, but Rowan Miller’s interception of Connor Belback’s pass early in the fourth quarter thwarted the drive.

“Our defensive coordinator, Casey Hilton, had a tremendous game plan coming into the night, Phillian said. “Those guys they’ve continued to do what they’ve done this season. We’ve been very opportunistic with the secondary, getting the linebackers involved as well tonight with the interceptions.”

The Greyhounds then put the finishing touches on the contest when Cam Kettering scored on a 21-yard run with 1:39 to play.

Despite playing without leading rusher Chase Mitcheltree, Wilmington was fine on the ground as Cam Kettering rushed for a game-high 78 yards on ten carries, while Freddie Zehetner chipped in with 75 yards on eight attempts.

Wilmington will look to keep its momentum going when it travels to Mercer next Friday night.

Gabriel Minjarez led Reynolds with 77 yards on 17 carries. The Raiders will look to bounce back when they host Lucas (OH) on Friday night.
