Wilson came into their matchup against Hempfield with a 5-1 record after rolling past Mifflin 42-10, while Hempfield sat at 3-3 following a convincing 34-7 win over Penn Manor. The two teams battled in a back-and-forth game, but Wilson was able to hold strong and pull out a 38-28 victory.

On Wilson’s opening drive, the Bulldogs moved all the way to the one-yard line after a big run from Michael Glover, but Hempfield’s defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs. Backed up at their own one, the Black Knights tried to throw downfield, but Wilson’s Jaiden Carpenter jumped the route and intercepted the pass, returning it deep into Hempfield territory. Just a play later, quarterback Mason Young handed it off to Correll Akings, who ran it in for the first score of the night to give Wilson a 7-0 lead.

After the interception return, Hempfield answered right back. The Black Knights moved the ball down the field before quarterback Derek Katch connected with Orion Abrams on a 41-yard touchdown strike, evening the score at 7-7.

Hempfield’s defense came up big on Wilson’s next drive, forcing another stop and quickly getting the ball back. The Black Knights then put together another strong drive, moving all the way down the field before Derek Katch called his own number and ran it into the end zone himself, giving Hempfield a 14-7 lead. That ends the half.

Wilson started the scoring in the second half after Correll Akings broke loose for a big run down to the one-yard line, where Mason Young handed it off to Ethan Harding for the touchdown. Shortly after, when Hempfield got the ball back, Derek Katch threw an interception to Braydon Farrell, who returned it all the way for a Wilson touchdown. 24-14 Wilson.

Wilson’s defense held strong in the fourth quarter, forcing a stop and getting the ball back. Unable to find the end zone, the Bulldogs settled for a field goal to extend their lead. Hempfield responded quickly, as Derek Katch once again connected with Orion Abrams on a deep pass that put the Black Knights at the five-yard line. The duo linked up again on the next play for a touchdown, cutting Wilson’s lead to 24-21.

With Hempfield’s defense bringing heavy pressure, Wilson faced a tough 3rd-and-11 situation. Quarterback Mason Young stayed calm and found Jaiden Carpenter, who broke free and took it all the way to the end zone, pushing Wilson’s lead to 31-21.

Hempfield found the end zone one more time after P.J. Poole hauled in a deep pass that set them up at the two-yard line, where Matthew Talbott ran it in to make it 31-28 with Wilson still in front. Wilson answered right back, as Monty Greer broke free for a strong run into the end zone, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 38-28.

With under a minute left, Hempfield looked to score quickly, but Elijah Dean sealed the game by coming down with an interception. Mason Young then took a knee to run out the clock, securing Wilson’s 38-28 victory.
