The Windber Ramblers put it all together to take down the Carrick Raiders with a final score of 49-6. They were led by senior running back RJ Tallion, who rushed for 173 yards and four touchdowns. Offense was not the only thing Windber did right tonight as their defense dominated. Carrick’s only points came late in the fourth quarter on a long touchdown, but the Rambler defense played a near perfect game. Head Coach Matt Grohal was nothing short of impressed with his team tonight.
On the defense tonight, Coach Grohal said, “We were worried because their quarterback can really sling it and they got some guys on the flank that are obviously quicker than our guys. We played a lot of cover two tonight, which we don’t hang our head on and our guys really executed the game plan. We put in some extra blitz plays to try and get pressure on the quarterback and get him out of the pocket. The guys up front executed and the guys on the back end played really well tonight.”
Three of Tallions touchdowns came in the first quarter as Windber was able to get out to a 28-0 lead. His fourth came right before halftime, which put the Ramblers up 35-0.
Coach Grohal said, “We lined up in our base single wing stuff and thought we could muscle him through the six hole and he did a great job. He’s our backup tailback. Our starter is out for a couple weeks and he did a great job stepping in and running the ball. The guys up front were physical and I thought we won the game up front on both sides of the ball for sure.”
Coach Grohal was not the only one to credit the offensive line with this impressive performance from their running back. Tallion credits his line for his performance tonight
Tallion stated, “Our lineman blocked amazing. That’s basically all there is to say. They opened the holes so much that I barely got touched.”
Senior back Bryce Chicarell ran for a touchdown tonight, lineman Mason Horner recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and Camden Marx ran for a touchdown for Windber.
Carrick struggled to move the ball offensively. They were sacked four times and fumbled snaps twice that resulted in a touchdown and a safety. Defensively, they just could not stop the run game. Penalties also killed them with multiple neutral zone infractions and unsportsmanlike conducts.
One positive was quarterback Kane McCartney was able to hit Marcus Fields for a 58 yard touchdown, which got the Raiders to avoid the shutout.
Windber improved to 4-2 and will travel to Everett next week. Carrick dropped to 1-4 and will travel to Brownsville next week.
