Dr. Henry A. Wise High School was too big and too quick for Broadneck as the Pumas defeated the Bruins Friday night in a light drizzle at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.  Wise wins the big boy Class 4A title, their 5th all-time.  The Pumas started slow on offense, but continued to grind with their punishing, pounding running game led by their star back, the 5’11” 220-pound DeCarlos Young.  The bruising Wise offensive line averages 6’2” 282 lbs.

Young is a very good running back with quickness, power and speed not often seen at the high school football level.  The Puma defense was just as quick, strong, and fast allowing Broadneck very little room to breathe.  The Bruins garnered just 2 first downs and 38 total yards in the first half yet only trailed 15-0.  Broadneck threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Wise ‘D’ and still couldn’t crack that defensive wall of the Pumas.  In fact, Broadneck was outgained in the first half 177 to 38.

Broadneck’s opening three drives of the game began at their four, one, and three.  The possession from their one resulted in a safety when quarterback CJ Watkins was tackled in the end zone by a Puma by the name of Damilola Olanlokun.  That was the sole score of the first quarter.

Broadneck QB CJ Watkins is about to get sacked for a safety by #12 Damilola Olanlokun of Wise.

DeCarlos Young had himself a nice second quarter by rushing for 61 yards and two touchdowns to give his Wise Puma team a 15-0 halftime advantage.  His first score was on a nice 15-yard run, the second he bounced outside and outraced a couple defenders to pay dirt.

DeCarlos Young (#1 in black) is about to score on his 6-yard run.

A third quarter touchdown by Peyton Nelson on a 4-yard run gave the Pumas their final tally of the evening and set the final at 21-0.  Wise closed the 2023 season with a 12-1 record.  Broadneck ended up 11-3.  With the shutout, the Puma defense allowed just 99 points for the year.

Braodneck student section was loud and proud.
