The Wissahickon Trojans took the trip east to take on Upper Merion. They took care of the Vikings, 52-28. Each team had a different outcome in week zero, Wissahickon beat Upper Dublin and Upper Merion lost the heartbreaker to Lower Merion. This was the home opener for the Vikings and they were hoping to make a denturihg statement.

The Vikings started the game by receiving the ball. On the first play of the game, Rudolf Wilhelm threw an interception. This set up Wissahickon in great shape in enemy territory. They capitalized quickly. Quentin West caught his first of what was a three-score day from him.

The Vikings answered right away. They started driving and Nasir Harper ran one all the way to the endzone, things were all tied up at seven. The Trojans finished the quarter scoring two more touchdowns, 21-7.

Heading into the second, Upper Merion had dues to pay after letting up two free touchdowns at the end of the first quarter. Which they did, the Vikings drove all the way down the field, and the drive was capped off by a 3-yard Teddy Walmsley touchdown reception. That led us to the half, 21-14.

The second half was Wissahickon’s breakaway point. They opened the half taking the ball all the way down the field and rushing it in for six. After an interception, the Trojans did the same thing and added another score.

This trend continued throughout the rest of the game. Wissahickon really pulled away and found their groove in the third, scoring three touchdowns. Upper Merion put one up as well, a Zion Smith touchdown reception. The score heading into the fourth and final was 42-21.

Wissahickon added ten more points while the Vikings added on another touchdown. Sophomore Archer Haye caught the fourth quarter touchdown for Upper Merion. The final score was 52-28, and Upper Merion moved to 0-2 on the season.

The 2025 season has definitely kicked off slow and disappointing for Upper Merion. First the heartbreaker to Lower Merion, then having this kind of performance in your home opener. Head coach Marquis Weeks emphasized postgame that Wissahickon was dangerous and they knew it and talked about what went wrong.

“So, you know Wissahickon is a dangerous team, and we saw that coming in. They beat their rival last week after 13 years, and that’s a sign right there. Watching film, we saw they had a lot of weapons on offense, so we knew we were going to have to play a really good game. Eventually you know we just got gassed, coming out into the second half and we just couldn’t contain all of their weapons. That’s one of the things as a team we have to get better with, capitalizing off of a good first half. You know we got down early, came back in the game, fought back, went into half time down by seven. You know we had to give the ball back to that dangerous offense, and they came out, drove down and punched us right in the mouth”.

Turnovers, especially interceptions have been killer thus far for the Vikings. New young quarterback Rudolf Wilhelm gave his thoughts post-game.

“The result of the game does not show our complete effort throughout the whole game. The whole first half we were in it. They punched us, we came back. Then at halftime we were all rolling, then got punched and it kind of just all fell apart from there. Nobody let things go, everyone kept fighting”.

Upper Merion will take a trip to West Chester East to whom they took a tough loss to last year, next Friday (9/5). That game will kick off at 7:00 PM.
