
Wyoming Area defeats Crestwood in season opener

Friday night was Jack Gravine’s first start at quarterback at any level. Gravine’s scored on a 53 yard run then threw a 42 yard touchdown pass to Nick Ciampi late in the fourth quarter as Wyoming Area took their season opener with a 24-21 victory at home over Crestwood. “I just wanna thank my coaches for believing in me as a quarterback.” Gravine said. “It feels great to come down with the win tonight and I’m so happy for my boys and my team.”
The Warriors started with the ball. Gravine got the ball in the hands of Luke Kopetchny. His first catch was for 17, later in the drive, he had a 12 yard reception on third down. On the very next play, Gravine broke free and scored from 53 yards out to make it 7-0 Wyoming Area with 9:45 remaining in the first quarter.
The Comets started their first drive, it looked like they had a chance to tie the game on a fourth and 7 but the touchdown was called back due to a blindside block penalty. After the penalty, still 4th and 7 but the pass fell incomplete and the Warriors got a turnover on downs. The Comets tied the game late in the second quarter. It started with Jaden Shedlock finding Giovanni Barna for a 40 yard reception to the four yard line. The drive ended with Jacob Jeckell scoring from one yard out to tie the game at 7 with 3:11 remaining until halftime. Wyoming Area went on a long drive and faced a fourth and 10, Gravine dropped the snap but picked up and scrambled for 11 yards. Gravine found Josh Mruk for eight yards to the Crestwood 11 and they settled for a 27 yard field goal by Gavin Feeney to make it 10-7 as we got to halftime.
After both teams traded punts on their opening drives to start the second half, Shedlock found Jack Rodgers wide open for a 48 yard touchdown as the Comets took a 14-10 lead with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. Wyoming Area took back the lead as Trustin Johnson scored from five yards out to make it 17-14 with 3.6 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.
Crestwood’s next drive looked promising to start the fourth quarter, Shedlock found Barna for eight yards then went to Lucas Lawson for 10 yards as the Comets got to midfield. They weren’t able to move the ball past the Wyoming Area 49 and were forced to punt. The Warriors capitalized on the punt as Gravine found Nick Ciampi for a 42 yard touchdown that increased the lead to 24-14 with 5:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. Crestwood responded however as Shedlock found Barna and Lawson to get the Comets to the Wyoming Area 15 yard line. The drive ended with Shedlock scoring on a one yard touchdown run to cut the Warrior lead down to 24-21 with 3:28 to go.
Wyoming Area needed one first down to seal the game. The Crestwood defense got the stop and got the ball back with 1:18 left. A pass completion was negated by a holding penalty. Shedlock found Barna for 17 yards. After two incompletions, the Comets faced a fourth down and 3 yards to go. Shedlock ended up sacked and the Warriors defense held as Wyoming Area went to 1-0 with a 24-21 victory over Crestwood. Wyoming Area travels to Dallas next week. Crestwood goes to 0-1 and hosts Valley View next week.
