Wyoming Area takes home opener over Crestwood

When you think of Wyoming Area, you think of star running back Aaron Crossley. However, Friday night proved that they are much more than just one player. Michael Crane stepped up big with two touchdowns and Lidge Kellum scored on a sixty yard touchdown run to give the Warriors the lead for good as Wyoming Area took a 29-22 victory over Crestwood. “We’ve had guys with talent and they were talented last year as sophomores and juniors and they just grew and matured into their roles and making big plays.” Wyoming Area Head Coach Randy Spencer said.

The Comets started with the ball and James Barret started with a 15 yard run to get into Wyoming Area territory. On a third and 3 at the Warrior 34, Barret ran for five yards. On second and 6, Jaden Shedlock found Matt Sklarosky for 13 to the Wyoming Area 14 yard line. Crestwood was unable to get another first down and were forced to turn it over on downs. The Warriors took over at their own eight yard line and got the ball to their 47 yard line by an interception by Colin Lazo ended the scoring. Crestwood were unable to capitalize on the turnover as they went three and out.

The Warriors ended up driving the ball down the field into the red zone as the first quarter came to a close. On the second play of the second quarter, Michael Crane scored from three yards out to make it 7-0 with 11:21 remaining in the second quarter. The Comets started at their own 18. Shedlock found Osten Grigas for 14 on third and 10 to keep the drive going. Crestwood got into Wyoming Area territory and tied the game up on a two yard touchdown run by Shedlock with 4:41 remaining in the second quarter. The Warriors failed to score on their next drive but took up the rest of the clock to go into halftime tied up at 7.

Wyoming Area started with the ball in the second half. Anthony DeLucca found Josh Mruk for a 41 yard completion on the second play of the drive to get into Comet territory. Crossley scored his second touchdown of the game from 23 yards out to make it 14-7 with 9:11 remaining in the third quarter. It took two plays for Crestwood to tie the game as Shedlock answered with a 57 yard touchdown run.

The Warriors went three and out on their next possession. The Comets faced a fourth and 4 at their own 49 but Wyoming Area sacked Shedlock and the Warriors took over at the Crestwood 37. Three plays later, Crane scored from 23 yards out to make it 22-14 with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. On the PAT, the Comets went offside and Wyoming Area chose to go for two and got it when Crossley ran into the end zone for two points.

Crestwood drove down the field as Shedlock ran the ball five times out of the six plays they ran to end the third quarter. Second play of the fourth quarter, Allen Agnon ran in from 15 yards out for a touchdown. The Comets went for two on the touchdown and got it as Shedlock got into the end zone to tie the game up with 11:25 left in the game. On the second play of the Warrior drive, Lidge Kellum gave Wyoming Area the lead with a 60 yard touchdown run at 29-22 with 10:26 left in the fourth.

Crestwood looked to tie up the game. Taking over at their own 33 yard line. The Comets got into enemy territory with runs by Shedlock, Agnon and Grigas. They faced a fourth and 6 at the Warrior 36 yard line. The pass fell incomplete but pass interference was called, giving Crestwood a first down. They got as far as the seven yard line, a fumbled snap and false start backed up the Comets to the 25 yard line. They faced a fourth and 19 with 4:20 left and the pass fell incomplete. Wyoming Area wasted out the clock as they went to 3-0 on the season and will play Nanticoke next week at home. Crestwood falls to 0-3 but have lost all three games by one score.
