As with Montana, six-man football is a way of life in rural Wyoming. Small communities dotting the endless landscape of the Equality State still have schools. And thanks to six-man still have football. Introduced almost two decades ago, Kaycee was one of the prime beneficiaries of six-man starting in Wyoming.
Not having football, and sending kids to ‘nearby’ Buffalo to play, Kaycee took to the game to great fanfare. Today, the small town still has football at the picturesque Buckaroo Field behind the high school. But brighter days not so unlike the day of the Friday afternoon game, were behind them.
Just seven rostered players on the squad, with six of them dressed for the contest. Meanwhile, Riverside had upwards of 23 available players. The stark contrast in pre-game warmups was apparent. Kaycee only able to practice one platoon at a time, with coaches and others to fill in whatever spots opposite the ‘starters’.
But it was not all for naught. Kaycee, though winless, were not backing down from a fight. And fight they did.
At the beginning of the game, the valiant six decked in blue and gray held their own. Answering two Riverside touchdowns with one of their own. A third Rebel touchdown started to see cracks on the armor. The margin starting to wear heavy on the ironmen in blue.
The second quarter was all Riverside. A quick score on a long TD pass, a pick six, another long TD pass, and a 24 yard run left little doubt the outcome now. It was a game of attrition. And the team with six players was faced with the inevitable.
With 1.2 seconds left, Riverside added one more score, a 12 yard pass. Just one two-point PAT kick away from a second half with a running clock. The kick was no good, and Kaycee took some credit to keeping the running clock at bay.
The third quarter started slowly. Kaycee on a long drive ending on an unconverted fourth down. Before Riverside drove the field to surpass the 45 point rule on a 3 yard touchdown run. The reality of playing a six-man game with six players finally became an issue. A player injury left the home squad down to five players. Despite an offer from Riverside to pull one of their own and play five-on-five, the Buckaroos elected to call it a game. With 4:51 left, Riverside won the battle and the war, 58-6.
