Who is your favorite sports star and why?
My favorite sports star is Roberto Clemente. I did a book report on him in 4th grade and learned that he walked to pick up his neighbor’s groceries for over 2 years to earn enough to buy a bike. He used a guava branch as his first bat and a bean sack as his first glove. He also climbed a tree to sneak in the window in order to visit his father while he was sick in the hospital. This shows why he got his 3000th hit and left to help people recover from an earthquake. His triumphs over his own struggle inspire me everyday.
Why do you play football?
It takes me to a place that I cannot describe. I can remember as a kid, I would skip the practice that we didn’t wear pads. My older brother and I would stay at home and wear the pads and play each other. I fell in love at a very young age with the beauty in the uniqueness of football.
What sports movie would you watch every day if you had to pick one and why?
Remember the Titans. The movie is such a great depiction of America and the process that we are in because although schools are finally integrated, the same problems in that movie still occur today.
If your mom and dad are screaming at you from the stands, what is it they usually yell?
They usually yell “Come on Sam!” Because in their eyes I can do anything on that field. And at the end of the day that is why I play. I play in order to make my Mom proud to say that her son has made something for himself and that her son has fought countless hours to play the sport that he loves and is so good at. I love coming home and knowing that I made my family proud or watching film and hearing my parents or siblings voice when I score or make a big play on defense. I love every bit of it.
