When Jake Spencer touches the ball, it is usually one of those “hold your breath” moments. Trailing late in the game vs LaSalle early last season, Spencer grabbed a punt and 63 yards later his team was back with striking distance. He did the same thing vs powerhouse Malvern Prep for 89 yards.
That’s the kind of speed and explosiveness Spencer will take to the next level. Last night via twitter he announced he will be attending Colgate after he graduates. We caught up with Jake and asked him about his experience.
PFN: How long have you played football?
Jake: I’ve been playing football ever since I was 3 years old. The sport has been apart of my whole life.
PFN: Why did you choose to commit to the Raiders?
Jake: I chose to commit to the Raiders because there are not many schools in the country that compare to it. Unbelievable academics, amazing Football, beautiful campus. What more could you want?
PFN: Why commit early?
Jake: I committed so early for all the reasons I said above. It’s an amazing University!
PFN: Who was your biggest influence at Colgate, who recruited you?
Jake: Malik Twyman, a now Sophomore at Colgate. He used to go to my high school, and we talked for hours on end about Colgate. He told me nothing but good things about it and how amazing it is. He really helped sway my decision. The Coach who offered me the spot though was Coach Dakotsky. He’s the one who truly believed in me and that means more than anyone could know.
PFN: What do your parents think of your decision?
Jake: They love me decision to commit to Colgate. When we visited, they left campus thinking the same thing as me… “That was unbelievable.” They couldn’t be more proud of me and I’m so glad to have parents like that.
PFN: What are they getting in player like you?
Jake: I think Colgate is getting a player that works as hard as he can no matter what. I’ll do anything for my team and my teammates, no matter the situation. Also, I think I will be able to help this team both on the offensive end at the Receiver position, as well as on the special teams side of the ball.
PFN: What was the recruiting process like for you?
Jake: The recruiting process was an amazing experience. Being able to talk to all the coaches I talked to was awesome. In the end though, I know I made the right decision with Colgate.
PFN: Do you know what you’d like to study?
Jake: At the moment, I am still undecided.
PFN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the Penn State program?
Jake: Everything about the program is amazing. Their facilities are like no other, fantastic coaching staff, and the team is like family.
PFN: Tell everyone out there in Colgate football land something they’d never know about you until you told them:
Jake: Now this is a good question. Before every game, I have to listen the same last song every time… “Forever” by Drake.
PFN: Who is the person who most influenced you in your football career?
Jake: A couple people have influenced my football career. My grandfather, and both my parents. My grandfather is a huge role model for me. He’s an incredible man who I will always look up to. And to my parents, obviously they have supported me my entire life, through thick and thin. I love them more than anything in this world.
PFN: What is it you’d like all your high school team mates and fans to know about your decision that you might have a hard time saying in person?
Jake: If it wasn’t for all of you guys, I wouldn’t be where I am today. All my teammates mean the world to me and I wouldn’t be here without them.
