Scranton Prep dominates all phases of the game, defeats Trinity

Scranton Prep went into their pre-season very quietly this year.  After last year’s state playoff run, the losses from graduation seemed to be adding up.  There were questions as to who would play QB and how they would fill the shoes of a number of offensive and defensive playmakers.

Apparently, those questions have been answered…….and then some.

The Cavalier defense set the tone early by stopping District 3 powerhouse Trinity through the air, then stopping the run.  The Prep offense and special teams chipped in as well in a dominant 45-7 victory at Dunmore Veterans Memorial Stadium.  Prep’s Braedon McPartland and Brandon Farmer each had 2 rushing TD’s for the Cavaliers.

Trinity won the toss and deferred to the 2nd half.  Scranton Prep took the initial kickoff and used a good mix of run and pass to drive into Trinity territory, but the drive eventually stalled.  Prep K Tyler Bianchi was called on to kick a 32-yard field goal and he nailed it.  Scranton Prep took an early 3-0 lead with 9:16 left in the 1st quarter.

The Prep defense allowed a few short pass completions on Trinity’s ensuing drive, but the Cavaliers stiffened and forced a punt.  On their next drive, Prep used another mix of run and pass plays to drive deep into Shamrock territory as the 1st quarter gave way to the second quarter.  The Cavalier drive continued and ultimately was capped when Braedon McPartland hit paydirt on a 2-yard run to make it 10-0 Prep with 11:09 left in the 2nd quarter.

Trinity took the ball next but the Prep defense was able to keep the Shamrocks in check and force a punt.  The Cavaliers then executed another efficient drive that ended when Brandon Farmer cashed in on a 3-yard run to make it 17-0 Scranton Prep with 3:43 left in the half.

Then the wheels fell off for Trinity.

The Prep defense gave their offense a short field with another dominant showing, and it was Braedon McPartland scoring on a 2-yard run to make it 24-0 Prep with 2:35 left in the half.

Trinity again couldn’t get anything going against the Cavalier defense, and it was a short filed again for the Cavalier offense.  QB Oliver Swingle, who remained poised and efficient all night, hit WR Liam Haggerty for a 30-yard TD to make it 31-0 Prep with 52 seconds left in the half.

Trinity received the second half kick and made some advances but the Cavalier defense again stood tall and stopped the Shamrocks to force a punt.  Prep’s Noah Krzywiec fielded the punt at the Cavalier 45 and broke right and down the far sideline for a 55-yard punt return TD that put the game into mercy rule timing with the clock continuing to run and Scranton Prep had a 38-0 lead.

Prep’s Brandon Farmer added a 2nd TD in mercy rule time, a 30-yard run to make it 45-0.  Trinity did get on the board late in the 4th when QB Tyler Kurtz scored on a 2-yard run, and the final was 45-7 in favor of the Cavaliers.  Scranton Prep will face Fairfield Prep next Friday at home.
