When the defending District 2 Class 3A champ pays a visit to the defending District 2 Class 4A champ, I believe that is what you call a recipe for fireworks.

And even though they were a bit delayed, we sure had plenty of fireworks.

Scranton Prep tied the game with under 3 minutes remaining in regulation, then engaged in a blow for blow set of 3 overtime periods that finally saw the Cavaliers emerge with a 37-36 victory over North Pocono.  Prep QB Owen Jeffers ran for 3 scores and threw for 2 more.  For the Trojans, WR Cole West and QB Chase Zimmerman each ran for a score and threw for a score.

Scranton Prep took the opening kickoff and scored quickly when QB Owen Jeffers hit paydirt on a 22-yard run to put the Cavaliers up 7-0 with 9:32 left in the 1st quarter.

North Pocono then took their first possession and slowed down the pace of the game.  They executed an excellent drive that was capped when QB Chase Zimmerman scored on a 1-yard keeper to tie the game at 7 with 3:19 left in the 1st quarter.

B, and scored oth teams then engaged in a chess match, with each team’s defense making adjustments and forcing punts.  With just under 3 minutes left in the half, North Pocono K Shane Youngblood missed a field goal attempt.  Scranton Prep then worked quickly to move into North Pocono territory, and with 3 seconds left in the half it was Cavalier K Tyler Bianchi attempting a 39-yard field goal.  The attempt was blocked and at the half it was still a 7-7 tie.

North Pocono took the 2nd half kickoff.  They controlled the pace once again and drove into Scranton Prep territory and hit paydirt when RB Henry Wolff scored on an 11-yard run to give North Pocono a 14-7 lead with 8:23 left in the 3rd quarter.

Both defenses played great, especially in the 2nd half.  After North Pocono scored, there were several traded possessions and it looked as though Scranton Prep was running out of time as the game entered the 4th quarter.  The Cavalier defense stood tall however, and they regained possession about midway through the 4th quarter.  Scranton Prep executed a nice drive that ended with a Jeffers to RB Braedon McPartland 13-yard TD pass that tied the game with 2:26 remaining in regulation.

North Pocono had a nice drive going that stalled in Prep territory with under 2 minutes remaining.  Prep attempted several more plays, but with little yardage to show for it they decided to let the game go into overtime.

North Pocono had the 1st possession in overtime and they cashed in when WR Cole West hit RB Jayden Taylor with a 5-yard TD pass to take a 21-14 lead.  Scranton Prep answered though as Jeffers threw a 5-yard TD pass to WR Ricky Dewey to tie it up at 21.

In the 2nd overtime, Scranton Prep went first and on 4th-and-goal from the 1 it was Jeffers calling his own number and scoring on the keeper.  A penalty on the PAT by North Pocono gave Prep the ball at the 1 and RB Brandon Farmer ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Cavaliers a 29-21 lead.

North Pocono took their 2nd attempt and it was all Chase Zimmerman.  He threw for a TD pass to RB Henry Wolff, then threw for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 29 and force a 3rd overtime.

North Pocono went first and took no time to take the lead.  Cole West ran around the right end for a 10-yard TD run to put the Trojans up 36-29.

Scranton Prep then got their turn.  Jeffers ran around the left end for a 9-yard score.  The Cavaliers decided to go for 2 and Braedon McPartland ran around the right end and in for the conversion to give Prep the 37-36 victory.

After the game I spoke with Prep QB Owen Jeffers about the marathon victory:

North Pocono dropped to 6-1 and will head up to face Delaware Valley next Friday.  Scranton Prep improved to 6-1 and will head up to face Wallenpaupack.
