#TEAMPA is the best players in the state regardless of classification. It is based on what they did in 2016 as well as what they will do in the future. Here is the 2016 defense:
DEFENSIVE LINE
Damion Barber, Sr. – Harrisburg, 6-3, 240
Barber was named PFN First Team defensive line and Defensive Player of the Year in Class 5A. He also was voted Mid-Penn Commonwealth co-defensive player of the year. Barber was a monster up front for the Cougars where he recorded 11 sacks and 23 tackles for a loss to help Harrisburg make the state championship game. He is the No. 10 prospect in Pennsylvania according to Rivals and will continue his football career at Penn State.
Jaohne Duggan, Sr. – Liberty, 6-2, 270
Duggan was named PFN First Team defensive line in Class 6A. He caused havoc for opposing offensive lines recording 76 tackles, 14 sacks and 20 tackles for loss despite being the center of attention on the Hurricanes’ defense. Duggan was a PFN second team defensive lineman last year and will attend Rutgers University.
Luke Frederick, Sr. – Bishop Guilfoyle, 6-5, 225
Frederick was named PFN First Team defensive line and Defensive Player of the Year in Class 1A. Frederick was a major force on three straight state championship teams that shut down high-power offenses consistently. He will play college football for Delaware.
Kurt Hinish, Sr. – Pittsburgh Central Catholic, 6-3, 290
Hinish was named PFN First Team defensive line in Class 6A and a member of both the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 and the Tribune-Review Terrific 25. He led a Vikings defense up front that allowed only 13 points per game and made it the state championship game. Hinish was ranked 11 in Pennsylvania by Rivals and will play college football at Notre Dame.
Donovan Jeter, Sr. – Beaver Falls, 6-4, 260
Jeter was named PFN First Team defensive line and Defensive Player of the Year in Class 3A. He was also a member of both the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 and the Tribune-Review Terrific 25. Jeter was a disruptive force on the Tigers defense and led them to state championship. He was the No. 6 prospect in Pennsylvania according to Rivals and will attend the University of Michigan.
LINEBACKERS
David Adams, Sr. – Pittsburgh Central Catholic, 6-2, 235
Adams was named PFN First Team linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year in Class 6A. He was a member of both the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 and the Tribune-Review Terrific 25. Adams recorded 84 tackles and 5.5 sacks. As a three-year starter, he set the school record for career tackles. Adams is the No. 5 prospect in Pennsylvania according to Rivals and will attend Notre Dame.
Matt Bauer, Jr. – Cathedral Prep, 6-3, 220
Bauer was named PFN First Team linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year in Class 4A. He recorded 112 tackles and 11.5 sacks including one for a safety in the state championship game as the Ramblers took the title. Bauer is the No. 4 prospect for the Class of 2018 according to Rivals and has committed to Notre Dame.
Andrew Irwin, Sr. – Bishop Guilfoyle, 6-1, 210
Irwin was named PFN First Team linebacker in Class 1A. He recorded 154 tackles, 13.5 sacks an forced five fumbles for the three-time state champions. Irwin will play college football at Harvard.
Major Jordan, Sr. – North Schuylkill, 6-1, 215
Jordan was named PFN First Team linebacker in Class 3A. The four-year starter recorded 99 tackles and 5 sacks and was a PFN First Team linebacker in 2015. Jordan will play college football for Lafayette.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Exree Loe, Sr. – Johnstown, 6-1, 195
Loe was named PFN First Team defensive back in Class 4A. He was a shutdown cornerback for the Trojans and led them to their first-ever state playoff win. Loe was also a standout on offense but will play defensive back at West Virginia. He is ranked the 13th prospect in Pennsylvania by Rivals.
Collin Smith, Sr. – Ligonier Valley, 6-1, 200
Smith was named a PFN First Team quarterback in Class 2A. However, he was also a standout defensive back who will play safety at West Virginia. Smith recorded 74 tackles with two interceptions and two forced fumbles to lead the Rams to the state semifinal game.
Lamont Wade, Sr. – Clairton, 5-9, 190
Wade was named PFN First Team running back and Offensive Player of the Year in Class 1A. The four-year starter is the No. 1 ranked prospect in Pennsylvania and No. 9 overall according to Rivals. Wade might have been the best overall player in the state and was a member of both the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 and the Tribune-Review Terrific 25. He recorded four interceptions and returned three for touchdowns despite teams throwing away from him. He has committed to Penn State.
Isheem Young, Jr. – Imhotep Charter, 5-10, 200
Young was named PFN First Team defensive back in Class 4A. The junior is the No. 4 prospect in Pennsylvania from the Class of 2018 and is considered one of the best shutdown corners in the country from that class. He led a Panthers secondary was dominating and made it to the state championship game. He is being recruited by numerous FBS programs including schools from the SEC, Big 10 and ACC.
PUNTER
Barney Amor, Sr. – Central Bucks East, 6-2, 170
Amor was named the PFN First Team kicker in Class 6A. He also excelled as a punter averaging over 39 yards per kick for the Patriots.
