Game number 11 for me this season took me back to the Huntington Athletic complex to watch the hometown Huntsmen hosting the Paint Valley Bearcats. This is the 2nd time that I have watched this match up and the 2nd time watching it at the Huntington Athletic complex. The score in that game was 21-6 Paint Valley and that was back in the 2016 season. This year’s game would be much, much different, though the same team would post the win.
Things would start poorly for the super young Huntsmen when Nick Marion would not be able to handle the snap from center causing the first-year starting quarterback to take a 12-yard loss. One of the bright spots for the home team took place when Seth McClosky broke off a 51-yard run to get the momentum back to his team, after the big loss. Uncle Mo would switch sides when Cole Miller picked off a pass deep in his own territory then took the ball back about 90 yards for the games first score, but A block in the back negated the score. Tramel Byrd would run two straight times, with the 2nd being A 20-yard run. Cordell Grubb would do his best Sam Bam Cunningham impression as he rumbled to a 27-yard touchdown, on A play that showcased a double handoff. Dax Estep connected on the P.A.T. to make this a 7-0 game, with 6:35 left in the opening quarter. The Paint Valley defense got a bigtime play from, Caden Smith who banged Dalton Haubell stopping the talented running back to a short gain. After getting the ball back a short time later Grubb would dash 80 yards for another Bearcats score. Brayon Leach would stop Miller on a two-point run, after a mishap on the snap. The quarter had 5;30 left in it and the Bearcats lead was up to 13-0. With 4:24 left on the clock Cavan Cooper stripped the ball from A Huntsmen, he would spring about 35 yards for another Paint Valley Touchdown, after the P.A.T. the score had swelled to 20-0. The Bearcats got two nice plays before the quarter came to a close. First Justin Hall stopped Darius Brown holding the speedster to a short gain on the ensuing kickoff. The last play came when #20 (NOT ON THE SVC SPORTSZONE ROSTER)stopped McCloskey for a 5-yard loss.
With 9:49 left in the half, Miller got his pick-six on A nice play, that seen the young Sophomore score for 20 yards out. This was my third time seeing Miller play and I can say the kid gets better each time out. He is making a name for himself as a person opposing quarterbacks do not want to test. The score now stood at 26-0 game as the P.A.T. was missed. The Bearcats defense was back at it, with 9:23 left on the clock. First Cooper blasted McCloskey, after the tough as nail running back had picked up 6 yards. Cooper, who is turning into a pretty good quarterback, might be even better on the defensive side of the ball. McCloskey is A smaller back, that plays with the heart of A lion. Smith, would take his time being the hammer with McCloskey being the nail and the end result was a 10-yard loss, with 8:45 left on the clock. Trent Mettler would get himself A big pick and take the ball all the way back to the Huntington 5 yard line, with 7:59 showing on the clock.Eli Manion would cross the goal line to give the Bearcats another score. Estep made this a 33-0 game with his P.A.T, with 7:10 left in the half. A little under A minute later during a tight pile of players, A Bearcat came away with the ball giving the defense another turnover. Cooper would go the final 20 yards for the touchdown after Estep made his P.A.T. we had a 40- game. From there the running clocked started though the Huntsmen still had time to get a 3-yard touchdown run from McCloskey making this A 40-6 game.
The 2nd half flew by with little taking place other than the Bearcats lines dominating the game and McCloskey showing the heart of A champion. In between, we would see Braydon Clay have a long kick return to show the Huntsmen had zero quit in them, and then we had a fine 48 yard run from Dom Chambers to set up the final Bearcats score that came on A 1 yard Manion score. The Estep P.A.T. gave us the final score of 47-6.
I want to thank Coach Mitchell from Huntington for arranging for me to have a seat in the press box and say thanks to everyone that I spoke to within the press box, for making me feel at home. It was good to talk to Coach Dye and Cooper after the game along with Coach Mitchell. It’s hard to believe three coaches like those guys all treat me as one who belongs in their company.
