Last night was my fourth game of the 2020 season and the third one was delayed by lightning. This one started a little after 9:00, making another two-hour-plus delay, that I endured. This was also the 2nd trip to Paint Valley this season, as I took in their inter-squad scrimmage. The Bearcats played host to Frankfort Adena, a team that will be hard for anyone on their schedule to beat.
The Warriors would use five running plays, mostly going to their left to set up a Preston Sykes to Logan Bennett, who was wide opened for a 27-yard touchdown. Sykes would convert a two-point run, making this an 8-0 the game, with 8:56 left in the third. Sykes might be more dangerous running the ball than he throws, but make no mistake the kid can spin it.
The Bearcats would get a 29-yard pass play when Cavan Cooper slung a pass to Cole Miller, who made a leaping catch. Those two Sophomores can be awfully dangerous I.M.O and with growth and experience, they have the potential to leave their mark on the Bearcats program. The Bearcats would get on the scoreboard when Tramel Byrd followed his lineman into the end zone from a yard out. A two-point conversion pass was incomplete leaving this an 8-6 game, with 5:48 left in the quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 9 yard run by Cooper.
The Warriors used a 44-yard diving catch by Nate Throckmorton the third member of the four-headed beast they have. From there the same combo struck for a 16-yard pass play. Sykes would plow in from a yard and that was followed by another two-point conversion pass, from Sykes to Throckmorton, making this a 16-6 score, with:41 seconds left in the quarter. The Warriors offensive line seemed to be dominating at this point of the game allowing the offense to move at will.
The Bearcats would convert a fourth and one, on a sneak from Cooper. The seventh and final play of the drive came on a fine run from Byrd, who took a hit, kept his balance on his way to pay dirt. Cooper went to Miller on the two-point conversion pass to make this a 16-14 game. Byrd looks like the type of back, who can take it to the house each time he touched the ball. If the kid can stay healthy and his offensive line improves each game, he could have a big 2020 season.
The Warriors would overcome a few hiccups on their way to their next score, that came on a 60 yard run from Sykes. Sykes would use the fourth member of the four horsemen to convert another two-point try and that was a pass to Tate Myers, making this a 24-14 contest.
Those four seniors will cause a lot of wicked dreams for a lot of defensive coordinators this season.
Sykes would show his speed and defensive ability, when he stepped in front of A Cooper pass taking it 44 yards for another Warriors score. The young quarterback waiting a second too long to throw the ball and Sykes made the easy pick. Sykes was stopped short on the two-point try keeping this a 30-14 game, with 6:45 left in the half.
A 37 yard run from Byrd was a key play on the next Bearcat scoring drive, that came on a one-yard plunge by Cordell Grubb to make this a 30-20 game, with 3:16 left in the half. This was the one play where the Bearcats lined seem to play as a unit showing that they have the skillset and ability to do big things this season.
The Warriors final drive of the half had a lot of peaks and deep valleys but end the end the result was another score with just one second left on the clock. Sykes would spring to a 37 yard gain and then he appeared to hit Bennett for a score but a flag was tossed negating the score. Sykes would be sacked by Byrd for a short loss but a 15-yard penalty was called on the Bearcats to wipe out the sack. Facing a fourth and thirteen Sykes calmly hit Clay Wilt for a touchdown making this a 36-20 game.
The Bearcats would get an 87-yard touchdown pass from Cooper to Cole Miller then Byrd would convert the two-point run making this a one-score game (36-28). The young Bearcats at this point was showing a glimpse of the things that are going to come as this team gains game experience and get used to the newly installed offense brought by their new coach Corey Dye.
The Bearcats defense would force a turnover on downs when Sykes has rushed in to throw a pass that hit nothing but the turf. The Bearcats looked to have a score on the ensuing drive when Dax Estep threw what looked like a backward pass to Trent Mettler. who made the catch and threw a strike to Miller, who rushed to the end zone but the refs called an illegal forward pass to silent the crowd and take points off of the board. The Bearcats defense would get the final big play of the third quarter when Byrd came all the way across the field to hold Sykes to just a one yard gain.
Cole Miller would stop Myers for a four-yard loss after Myers made a nice catch. With 10:54 left in the game, the Warriors found themselves facing a fourth and sixteen, and as expected Bennett lined up to punt. He fields the snap looked to his left and took off picking up a gigantic first down. That I.M.O. was the biggest play of the game and it led to Sykes diving in from a yard out for a big touchdown. Sykes would hit Bennett for the two-point conversion making this a 44-28 game, with 7:41 left in the game.
The Bearcats would turn the ball over on downs giving the Warriors a short field to work with. Kole Williams would carry three straight times but on his third run, he coughed the ball up and A Bearcat came from the bottom of the pile with the ball. Earlier on the drive, Throckmorton would carry for a 13 yard gain.
With 3;11 left Cooper was being rushed and he threw the ball downfield where Clay Wilt picked it off and then made a nice run back. From there Williams would carry four straight times, with the end result being a two-yard touchdown run. Lucas Ray would miss his only attempted P.A.T to leaving this a 50-28 game and that would be the final score.
