Just before kickoff of the Olney Charter Boys Latin Charter game each team stood silent in honor of Olney Coach “Wave” William who had passed away this week. Although Coach Wave, as he was know, had only been with the Trojans for two months he had made quite an impression on the program. A noted Philadelphia youth coach who had lead his 215 Squad to a national championship, Coach Wave had quickly become a favorite of both the players and their families.

The first half was a defensive battle, with each team delivering bone jarring hits. Neither team was able to maintain any offensive continuity, each time either team seemed like they were about to muster some offense push, the opposing defense would bow there neck and lower the boom. Both teams came up with huge forth down stops in the red zone that kept the first half scoreless. Boys Latin was able to mount defensive stands after poor punts, but special teams miscues would comeback to haunt Boys Latin in the second half.

With the wind howling, blowing the ball off the tee, Boys Latin kicked a squib kick without a tee, which proved costly. Onley’s Khaleef Jones cleanly fielded the kick sprinting 65 yards untouched for the opening score. The conversion was no good giving Olney a 6-0 lead. Olney then attempted an onsides kick which Boys Latin fielded giving them the ball at their own 40. Boys Latin offense seemed to get into a rhythm with four straight inside runs by power back #33 Aaron McFadden. McFadden smashed his way to the Olney 40 before the drive stalled.

Olney went to a wildcat formation with RB Reggie McNeil taking the direct snap then running off tackle. But just had happened in the first half the Boys Latin defense stiffened, pushing Olney back on forth down. Likewise Boys Latin’s offense failed to move the ball and the score remained 6-0 heading into the forth quarter.

Early in the forth quarter Onley’s strong armed Quarterback  #2 Jabari Morgan came back in and hit receiver Khaleet Jones with a perfect 20 yard pass on a wheel route for Olney’s second score. The two point conversion was good, making the score 14-0.

A now desperate Boys Latin offense was able to move the ball to midfield but, on forth and six McFadden was brought down by a textbook tackle by safety Sean Robinson. From there Morgan again connected with Jones on the wheel route to the Boys Latin 11. On the next play Olney fumbled, but a heads up play by receiver #4 Cyncere Hennix turned the fumble into an Olney touchdown by scooping the ball up and sprinting to the end zone. The two point conversion was good, making the final score Olney 22 Boys Latin 0.

After the game Olney’s Head Coach Flowers talked about how important Coach Wave was not only to the team but to the community and how proud he would have been to watch the players work on their focus and proud he was that his team was able to focus in the second half.
