The Dawgs had high hopes coming into the 2022 season, but an 0-2 start wasn’t something they wanted to see. In week one they had Southern Columbia on the ropes but couldn’t close the deal, then they gave up a late score to Valley View for their second loss. Yesterday seemed to be their turning point. Berwick scored 49 points and the defense blanked Abington Heights for the first win of the year.

The Dawgs defense took control right off the bat with a sack, nearly intercepted a pass and gave the offense great field position on the Comets blocked punt by Alex Hacker on the 23.  Several plays later Matt Lonczynski found Spencer Kishbaugh for the first score of the game. Berwick again forced a punt and this time the snap went over the kickers head again giving Berwick a short field. Drey WIlk took an end around 20 yards and just like that Berwick was up 14-0 which is where the score remained at the end of one.

Kishbaugh and Lonczynski hooked up for a 20 yard td and again for a 48 yard score later in the second. Wilk returned a Comet punt 85 yards putting the Dawgs up 35-0. Ethan Lear returned an interception 50 yards and a Carmine Martz 31-yd pass from Ethan Lear closed out the scoring.

Mike Bennett thinks his team is maturing quickly. “I think it’s more of our guys realizing they could be a good team.  Whether it’s a miss assignment or mental error, I think they’re improving.  We adjusted practice this week to give some of the two way players a little leg rest, but mostly I think they were mad at themselves.”

Berwick hosts Williamsport this Friday and the Comets head to Western Wayne.
