Jersey Shore Bulldogs D4 (14-0) vs Aliquippa Quips D7 (11-1)

From Cambria Heights

PIAA 4A Semi-Final

Aliquippa will shoot for their fourth PIAA title on Thursday evening after beating previously undefeated Jersey Shore 41-16. It was all Jersey Shore for first 19 minutes. The Bulldogs led 10 to 0 and the Quips didn’t have a first down. With 5:12 to go in the first half Aliquippa started an 87 yard drive that ended in their first touchdown as time expired. The Quips would explode for five more touchdowns in the second half including three in the first six minutes of the second half to gain control of the contest. The Quips had a passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns on offense. They add two pick sixes from their defense and a punt return from their special teams in route to the victory.

The Bulldogs came out of the gates like a hare. Jersey Shore quarterback Brady Jordan hit Connor Griffin for 31 yards on the opening play. Two plays later Jordan threw deep to the end zone but was intercepted by Cyair Clark, the first of his two picks. Aliquippa would have four possessions in the first quarter, all three and outs. They would total 11 yards on twelve plays. The Bulldogs would spend the whole first quarter in the Quips territory except the opening play of the game. Jersey Shores next two possessions ended in a punt and a blocked field goal attempt. The Quips third punt of the game was blocked by Tate Sechrist setting the Bulldogs up at the Aliquippa five yard line. Aliquippa’s defense continued to play tough keeping the Bulldogs out of the end zone. Breck Miller kicked a 25 yard field goal for the games first points.

The Quips were able to finally flip the field position when the Jersey Shore kickoff went out of bounds. The Quips punted for the fourth time as the second quarter started.

Jersey Shore’s first drive of the second quarter who cover 78 yards in just under two minutes. Griffin had another big catch and two chunk runs put the Bulldogs at the Aliquippa 12. A holding call pushed the Bulldogs back to the 26. But on third and long Jordan scrambled to his right and hit Dathan Tyson for the games first touchdown.

Aliquippa would once again go three and out and punt. Jersey Shore would drive to the Quips 38 and face a long fourth and one. Head Coach Tom Gravish elected to punt and keep the Quips penned deep in their territory. A switch flipped somewhere and Aliquippa never looked back. The scoreboard showed 5:12. The Quips would go 87 yards and score on the final play of the half. Aliquippa quarterback Quentin Goode would complete three straight third down passes including one to Clark and another to Donovan Walker. They would than convert a fourth and one from the Bulldog 18. The Quips would use all three time outs and have eight seconds added back to the scoreboard. They drove to the Jersey Shore two yard line and appeared to have been called for a delay of game but were granted their third timeout. The Bulldogs stuffed the next two plays and Goode made what may have been the play of the game by spiking the ball with 1 second left instead of trying to jam it into the line for a third time. With the clock stopped the Quips took their time on the half’s final play. Tiqwai Hayes would score from one yard out as the time expired. It was 10 to 7 Bulldogs at halftime.

Aliquippa would take the lead for good on the first play of the second half. Goode would scramble to his left and was almost sacked before throwing deep down the sideline. The Quips had not one but two receivers behind the defense. Tajier Thornton made the catch and strolled with an escort 83 yards for a touchdown. After both teams punted, the Bulldogs would start their second drive of the half from their own 18. They would be pushed back inside their own ten when Jordan was forced to scramble right and threw the ball directly to Aliquippa’s Cameron Lindsey who waltzed into the end zone. Two minutes later Clark would field a punt inside his own 10 run to right sideline, reverse direction and go back across the field and down the left sideline for a 94 yard punt return. The Quips had four touchdowns in less than six minutes. Both teams would exchange punts on their next possessions. The Aliquippa punt on the run from their own end zone went out of bounds at the Quips 29. Brady Jordan would sneak into the end zone with just seconds to go in the third quarter to cut the lead to 27 to 16.

The Bulldogs had hope as the final period started. The Quips faced third and long from inside their own 20. They would get 83 yards and a touchdown in two plays. Goode threw deep to Clark who made an unbelievable diving catch on the first play. Hayes would then outrun the Bulldogs for a long touchdown run on the next play. The Bulldogs were now forced to pass and were unable to play catch-up. Clark would make a super pick six with just under two minutes to go in the game to cap the scoring. The final Aliquippa 41 and Jersey Shore 16.

Notes:

-This was my 33rd game of the year and Cyair Clark is the best player I have seen play.

-Bulldog Cooper Peacock is almost as good, this was the second time I saw him play. On defense he seems to make every tackle.

-Usually I’m pretty good at guessing when a score is coming and switching from photos to video-but the Quips strike quickly and without warning!
