COMMITTED TO DUQUESNE

Today Gateway tackle Matthew Brooks decided he’d seen enough of the recruiting process and committed to Duquesne. We asked him why he made that choice and who recruited him at Duquesne:
When I first stepped on campus I knew where I wanted to go to school. I’m only 20 minutes from home so I can still see all my family and friends. Reggie Wells is the man who recruited me. Him and the coaching staff is another huge reason why I picked Duquesne. They are some of the coolest guys i’ve met and i’m looking forward to being coached by them.

Why do you play football?
The most fun I have in life is when i’m playing football.

Who is your favorite sports star and why?
Lawrence Taylor because I love how aggressive and relentless he was.

Do you have a favorite play you remember the most? Explain:
Definitely when I got the scoop and score against Connellsville. The energy and support from my teammates was unmatched. I was out of breathe from celebrating so hard.

What are your goals for this coming season?
My main goal is to lead my team to a championship. I watch these guys work hard on and off the field and a championship is what they deserve.

What is your favorite Pro team, any sport?
Pittsburgh Steelers

What game, yours, college or pro, was your favorite game and why?
My first Pittsburgh Penguins game is by far my favorite. I knew nothing about hockey but after watching I instantly became a fan. It’s the most fun sport to watch in my opinion.

What sports movie would you watch every day if you had to pick one and why?
Remember The Titans. I love the moral of the story but that soundtrack defines my childhood.

Gru from Despicable Me only because he’s bald.

If your mom and dad are screaming at you from the stands, what is it they usually yell?
“Get your hands off your knees”

Name one thing that you’d love to do in football that may never happen?
Play running back

Who is your mentor, the person you want to be like? WHY?
Definitely my father. Throughout my whole life he was the only man that I could trust. When I asked for a favor he always did it. When I needed something for football he always got it for me. He is the most reliable person I know. I aspire to be a good father like he has been to me.

Name a sport you’d love to play but can’t:
Hockey. I wish I could skate.

What is your most embarrassing sports moment?
Airballing a free throw in front of a thousand people in 7th grade.

Is there anyone in your family, besides your parents, you could consider your biggest fan? Who, Why?
I find my older brother Tyler my biggest fan. Even though he’s not the most emotional guy, he’s always pushing me to be better. He was the guy that I started working out with. Without him I wouldn’t be even close to who I am today.

When you aren’t playing, practicing or training for sports, what is your go to activity and why?
I personally like golfing. I like going to the range and seeing how far I can hit the ball.
