District 7: Mid Season Recap

The 2023-24 season has presented itself to be a season to remember with a lot of teams continuing the their last season success and some new teams stepping onto the scene.

So far this year: both WPIAL teams that won a state title (Belle Vernon, Pine-Richland) last season have winning records and remain top teams in their respective classes. Belle Vernon is 3-1 overall without playing a single conference game. Their only loss coming in week four to Thomas Jefferson who is in the class above them. Pine-Richland despite their 1-2 overall start to the year has won two games in a row. The Rams had also started last season with the same record and the result was the best possible outcome.

Central Catholic appears to have reclaimed their crown as the best team in 6A football. The Vikings average 50.2 points a game and on average give up 16.2. In conference games so far this season the Vikings have scored 99 points while they have given up 22 points in conference play, all of which happened last week when Central took on North Allegheny. The second place spot is currently in a three-way tie between North Allegheny, Mt. Lebanon, and Canon-Mac. 

If there has been a Class that has provided a shock to the year it is 5A. Last season, in the Allegheny Six Conference Bethel Park and Upper Saint Clair were at the helm, but after 47 combined seniors have graduated and Peters Township has taken full advantage. The Indians sit alone at the top of the mountain and that has a large part to do with their defense. Peters has on average allowed 2.8 points a game, and not a single point when playing a conference opponent. 

Thomas is off to a 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference start while McKeesport, while behind TJ overall with a 4-1 record, sits in first place in the Big Seven Conference with a 2-0 conference record. The Aliquippa Quips now started 4-0 for the second straight season and a large part of that is due to junior RB Tiqwai Hayes. Hayes has rushed for 599 yards and 10 TDs so far this year which is 10th in all WPIAL rushing and second in rushing TDs. 

Last season, Seton LaSalle went 0-10 on the year and now the 4-1 Rebels find themselves on top of the Western Hills conference with Avonworth. The Rebels have scored 91 points in just two conference games so far this year. 

Another team that struggled last year and are having a good first half of the season are the Waynesburg Central Raiders. The Raiders also went 0-10 last year and this season are 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Cornell Raiders went 4-5 last season, now they have surpassed their win total and are 5-0 on the season this year.
