Players helped unload tires

When your a part of a football team you’re more than just a teammate, you’re an ambassador of your program, school and community. I’ve never spoken to a player who didn’t care about the community from which they come. This past Saturday, the Smethport Hubbers showed their care for their community by giving back. The helped PA Cleanways collect nearly 2,000 old tires to send away to be recycled.

Coach Adam Jack explained how they became involved and the process:

“We’ve gotten a lot of support over the years from the community and businesses in support of our annual charity golf tournament, our team fundraiser, so last year we decided we wanted to do something to give back. I made contact with Jeff Tanner, who is the President of the Mckean County chapter of PA Cleanwaste and he said we always need help with our tire cleanup. I thought that was the opportunity we were looking for.

The operation is well organized. People of the community make appointments to have the tires brought in to the Smethport Borough sheds. From there the kids helped unload them as they were delivered and loaded them on two different tractor trailers. Some are reconditioned, and some are recycled and actually whats kinda cool is some of the better tires are used to make the little pellets in the turf field. They helped collect around 1,700 tires. So that’s what we did and I’m proud of my guys for their effort.”
