Hundred Hornets (WV) sting the Millersport Lakers (OH) 43-20

Saturday afternoon I made the familiar drive to Millersport, Ohio to watch a very young Lakers team battle the Hundred Hornets out of West Virginia. The Hornets came in with a 1-2 record while the Lakers were 0-4. The crowd of nearly 300 people was treated to a hard-fought clean game, where both teams seemed to give 100% on each play.

Brock Wright would make the first big play of the day when he got to the Hornets Colt Sandy for a loss of 5 yards, at the 10:16 mark of the opening quarter. Sandy shrugged off the negative play by going for 51 yards a short time later on a nice run, supported by the work of his line and some nice field vision. A 17-yard run by Karter Parson set up the games first score that ended the Hornets 12, play, 60-yard drive. Scoring was Toby Michael on a 6-yard gut run. Michael got the hold down in time for Parson to nail the point after kick to give us a 7-0 score with 5:52 remaining in the quarter

A much snap by Jacob Eiginger gave the ball right back to Hundred when Michael pounced on the ball like an Alley cat stealing a meal. A 9-yard touchdown run by Parson made this a 14-0 game heading into the second quarter of play.

The Lakers pulled off a fake punt with 10:51 left in the half when Nichols Yingling broke to his right cut up field and picked up 20 yards, with 10:51 left in the half. Eiginger would throw a pick just eleven seconds later when his pass found the hands of Parson. The Lakers defense got the ball right back to their offense when Jason Wells picked off a Michael pass taking it back to the Hornets 9-yard line. After Mason Norris sacked Eiginger for a loss of nine, Eiginger found Yingling to get that nine yards back. The drive took a big hit when Michael got to Eiginger for a four-yard loss.

With a little under five minutes left in the half, Michael was forced to scramble where he picked up 15 yards. The Hornets ran a play to the far side of the field with the result being a big scrum fighting for yards with the ball coming loose and when the piled clear the refs signaled Lakers football.

Michale would throw a 46-yard touchdown pass to an wide-opened Sandy to make this a 21-0 game. Right before the half came to a close Eiginger was sacked by Ayden Britton.

The third quarter would see Will Morgan recover an Eiginger fumble, and Yingling pick off a Michale pass before the offense for either team showed up. Wells picked up 13 yards on a reverse that went to the right side followed by a fake reverse that saw Eiginger go 22 yards for the Lakers touchdown to close the Hornets lead to 21-6 with 3:29 showing on the clock.

The Hornets would take eight plays picking up a few yards here and a few yards there to set up a 10-yard Michael touchdown run making this a 28-6 contest. Millersport answered with a 48-yard Eiginger to Wells 48-yard touchdown pass followed by an Eiginger to Justin Phillips two-point pass conversion to make this a 28-14 game with 9:48 remaining in the final frame.

The Hornets would end a 7-play, 57-yard drive with a Michael 9-yard touchdown run with a Michael to Brayden Bartrug two-point conversion pass to make this a 36-14 game. On the ensuing kickoff, Phillips muffed the kick with Sandy racing downfield and falling on the ball putting the Hundred offense right back on the field. Michael made the Lakers pay dearly for the turnover when he found Parson for a 10-yard touchdown, where Parson broke a tackle and then used a Walter Payton-type stiff to find pay dirt. Joseph Wade was called on to attempt his first point after kick of the game and his kick was true making this a 43-14 game.

The Lakers never quit and this showed in a large way when Brock Wright caught a pass to a step or two fumbled the ball, scooped it up, and raced 79 yards to score a touchdown. Eiginger ended the scoring on a two-point conversion run to make the final score 43-20.
