Last night I made my first trip ever to New Lebanon to watch the home team Delta Greyhounds battle Middletown Madison. Both entered at 2-3 but according to Calpreps they were worlds apart with their 48-14 prediction. When all was said and done Calpreps came out two points off because of missed PAT’S.
Delta would try to electrify the crowd by running a fake punt play just 1:58 seconds into the game, and they did just that, but it was the wrong crown who was electrified because the play, a pass was incomplete giving the ball to Madison at the Dixie 28 yard line.
Madison would need 7 plays to light the scoreboard on an 1 yard run by Chase Patrick, a Freshman who wears lucky number 13. The PAT never got off because of a bad snap, forcing Quincy Brown to try to throw a pass that was incomplete to keep this a 6-0 game.
After getting the ball back the Mohawks would get a 28 yard run from Logan Gibson that would have gone for a score, if not for a nice tackle by Devin Johnson of the Greyhounds. The Mohawks lit up the scoreboard again with 3:53 left in the quarter, when Gabe Higgs rolled in from 3 yards out. The PAT by Korbin Kilbarger was spot on to make this a 13-0 game.
The Mohawks would get a 62 yard from Logan Gibson on the first play of their next drive the PAT was good and we had a 20-0 game, with 10:43 left in the half. Dixie would finally get some momentum when Logan Grubb dashed for a 49 yard run, but on the next play Jimmy Myers put the ball on the ground and pouncing on it like Billy Bates was Devin Oligee from Madison. From there it was a nice catch and run from Jake Edwards for 50 yards or so. A 20 yard touchdown run by Gibson made this a 27-0 game, after another PAT. The Madison defense wasted no time in getting the ball back to it’s explosive offense, who used a 81 yard run by Quincy Brown to light up the scoreboard again. The PAT would make this a 34-0 game, with 7:45 still left in the half. One final score from Madison in the half came on a 5 yard run from Gibson with another point after catch the scoreboard read 41-0. The long opening half ended for Delta on a interception by the Mohawk’s Jake Edwards.
With a running clock the 2nd half went by rather quickly, but it did have some nice moments for the home team but they came after Brayden Williams returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for another Madison score. The last point of the game for Madison came on the PAT kick by Korbin Kilbarger. Dustin Smith took the ball 16 yards to give Dixie a first and goal at the Dixie six yard line,Dustin Simon went the final six yard to make this a 48-6 game, with 2:22 left in the third quarter. The game would see one more touchdown and that came with 3:47 left in the game, when Logan Grubb went nine yards. Trevor Hall closed out the scoring with his PAT to make the final score 48-13.
