On Friday afternoon, Mount Carmel School District Superintendent Pete Gouda announced that football will return to Centralia after nearly seven decades without a football team. The decision was made unanimously by the Mount Carmel School District, which also covers the town of Centralia.
A new football field will be constructed near the corner of South Avenue and Locust Street. The $1.5 million dollar facility will feature a 2,000 seat stadium, press box, scoreboard, heat-resistent field turf and 100kW LED lighting.
“It’s a great thing for this area,” said local resident, Barbra Sharpie, at the unveiling. “There’s so little to do here.”
Funds for the new stadium complex were raised by the local Firefighters’ Union through door-to-door donations from the community members. Construction is expected to begin this summer with hopes to be completed by April 1st, 2024.
Groundbreaking is planned as soon as the location is deemed safe for construction. Centralia High School currently has no permanent building. Also, the school has no teachers or students.
