The Avonworth Antelopes waited 70 years between their first and second WPIAL titles. Tonight, Avonworth has won back-to-back WPIAL class 3A titles and three in the last seven seasons defeating Imani Christian Academy 30-6.
Imani Christian received the opening kickoff and despite the three and out, the Saints capitalized off of a Avonworth muffed punt and were able to get the ball back on the edge of Antelope territory.
Avonworth’s defense stood strong pushing the Saints not only out of field goal range, but back onto their side of the field too.
Both Avonworth and Imani Christian have both displayed dominant offenses this entire season, but it was the defenses that kicked off the WPIAL 3A Championship game. As both teams traded punts their following drives.
The Antelopes broke the stalemate when they had a 12-yard pick six by Romello Harris to give the game its first points. Avonworth led 7-0 with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Saints proceeded to punt on every possession they had in the first half, while Avonworth only had a field goal on top of their earlier interception.
The Antelopes led 10-0 with less than three minutes remaining in the half when Luca Neal turned on the jets and took off for a 67-yard rushing touchdown. Avonworth led 17-0 going into the half.

Exiting halftime Avonworth punted on its opening possession, but got it right back when Jaden Jones got the interception which was returned to the endzone giving Avonworth their second pick-six of the night. The Antelopes led 24-0 early into the second half.
Avonworth got the ball back quickly and it was Jones again finding the endzone enforcing a 30-0 lead over the Saints with under five minutes left in the third quarter.

The Saints did find the endzone eventually with Gabe Jenkins on the one-yard QB rush early in the fourth quarter, however the Antelopes lead was too far ahead.
Avonworth held the ball for over half of the entire fourth quarter and won with a final score of 30-6.
This is Avonworth’s fourth all-time Class 4A WPIAL title and the Antelopes are now back-to-back WPIAL Champions (2025, 2024, 2019, 1959).
Head coach Duke Johncour acknowledged there was a different feel to tonight’s game than in years past.
“We were hungry last year, and we were able to beat a good Central Valley team,” Johncour said. “This group has been resilient, they know nothing different, this is their fourth year in a row here and they were hungry.”
The closest win Avonworth has had this season was now two weeks ago against North Catholic when they won by 22 points. Johncour said that is due to a well-balanced football team.
“We’re balanced all-across the board offensively and defensively,” Johncour said. “The kids bought into what we do. They’re excited about it and they’re good role models for the young kids and they don’t cry if they don’t get the ball.”
Neal finished the game with 105 total rushing yards and a touchdown, and said that even when he isn’t running the ball, this team is always unselfish.
“Our whole team is unselfish,” Neal said. “We all know our roles. I have the most trust in coach Johncour…we’re all unselfish and know what we have to do.”
Avonworth now moves into the state side of the bracket where they will play Penn-Cambria high school. This will be the second-consecutive year these teams have faced off in the PIAA bracket since last year when the Antelopes defeated the Panthers 16-6 at Norwin High School.
“I’ve already watched Western Lehigh three or four games already,” Johncour said. “They’re too good of a football team to wait until next Saturday or Sunday night, so I have a folder on them already. Western Lehigh and Penn-Cambria; both of them.”
