As we get to playoff time, things usually boil down to who can stop the run.  For both Exeter Township and Bishop McDevitt, this was most certainly the case as the 2 teams squared off in a District 3 semi-final matchup.  It was the Crusaders who solved the puzzle the fastest though, using a balanced offensive attack and a smothering defense to allow their Offensive line to take over the game in a 42-0 shutout win.  RB Nazir Jones-Davis had 2 rushing TD’s, and QB Sebastian Williams threw 2 TD’s to WR Howard Holton Jr.  RB Jerome Larue Jr and RB Maurice Barnes Jr also had rushing TD’s for the Crusaders.

Both teams were successful in stopping the run early.  Exeter Township standout RB Leomar Brown was put to the test early and often, and the Crusader defense kept him mainly in check.  Meanwhile, as the Eagle defense played stout against the Bishop McDevitt run game, it was QB Sebastian Williams who methodically used the pass to gain yardage.  McDevitt’s first drive of the game was capped when Williams hit WR Howard Holton Jr for a 20-yard TD to give the Crusaders an early 7-0 lead with 7:19 left in the 1st quarter.

Exeter Township had a bit more success on their next drive as they gained yardage into McDevitt territory, but the Crusader defense stood tall and got the stops they needed.  As the 2nd quarter began, McDevitt had the ball near midfield when RB Nazir Jones-Davis broke a big 53-yard TD run to make it 14-0 McDevitt with 11:19 to go in the 1st half.  McDevitt rolled from there, getting quick stops on defense and using a balanced offensive attack to continue to rip off yards.  RB Jerome Larue Jr scored on a 9-yard run with 5:13 left in the 1st half to make it 21-0, and after another defensive stop it was RB Maurice Barnes Jr who hit paydirt on a 6-yard run to make it 28-0 McDevitt at the half.

The Crusaders had won the toss and deferred, so as they took the 2nd half kickoff they began a long, clock-consuming drive that was capped when Jones-Davis struck again when he had a 3-yard TD run.  With 3:04 left in the 3rd quarter, the mercy rule was invoked and McDevitt had a 35-0 lead.  The Crusaders did get one more TD when Williams hit Holton for a nice weaving catch-and-run to make it 42-0, which ended up being the final score.

Bishop McDevitt improved to 10-2 and advanced to the District 3 Class 5A title game.  Exeter Township finished their season at 10-3.
