Lakeland too much for Dunmore, wins District 2 Class 2A Championship (VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS)

On a windy and rainy night up on the hilltop at Lakeland High School, the Chiefs played host to the Dunmore Bucks.  Lakeland played great defense, and used a balanced offensive attack early to keep Dunmore off track, and the Chiefs defeated the Bucks 27-7 for the District 2 Class 2A Championship.  Lakeland QB David Naniewicz ran for 2 scores and threw for another, and RB Rocco Spotaro added a late TD as well.

Both teams traded defensive blows early to try to stop the run game of the other, but it was QB David Naniewicz that gave Lakeland the early boost.  Naniewicz used a nice mix of run and pass on Lakeland’s first drive, and he capped it with a 1-yard TD run to give Lakeland a 7-0 lead with 6:45 left in the 1st quarter.

Dunmore continued to try to establish their run game, but after driving into Lakeland territory they stalled and turned over the ball on downs.  As the 2nd quarter began, Lakeland was driving into Dunmore territory when Naniewicz broke free on a 31-yard soring run to make it 14-0 Lakeland with 11:19 left in the 2nd quarter.

As the weather played a significant factor with high wind and steady rain, Dunmore could not get a sustained drive going.  The Bucks defense made some big stops but also gave up some big plays, and Lakeland was able to cash in when Naniewicz hit RB Gavin Roberts for a 14-yard TD pass with 42 seconds to go in the half to make it 21-0 Chiefs.  Dunmore made it interesting right before half as they drove quickly down the field through the air, but a Hail Mary pass right before the half was knocked down by the Chiefs secondary.

Both defenses played tough in a scoreless 3rd quarter, but it was the Chiefs again getting on the board first in the 4th quarter when RB Rocco Spotaro took the handoff and weaved through the Bucks defense for a 43-yard score to make it 27-0 Lakeland with 8:16 left in the game.  Dunmore did eventually get on the board when RB Ryan Mecca scored on a 3-yard run to make it 27-7 with 3:31 left, but Lakeland was able to run it out to seal the win.

Lakeland improved to 11-1 and will now go on to face the winner of Bristol and Lansdale Catholic.  Dunmore ended their season at 8-4.
