Riverside WR Carmello Barnett had 2 TD’s in the first quarter, then added a 3rd score later on a 70-yard interception return for a TD in the 2nd half as the Vikings defeated Montrose 60-6 up at Bennett/Mullen Field in Montrose.
Montrose received the opening kickoff, but after a quick 3-and-out it was a bad snap on the punt attempt that ended in disaster with Riverside taking over possession at the Meteor 14. On the very next play, Riverside WR Jared Jackson scampered in for a 14-yard TD run that made it 7-0 with 9:40 left in the 1st quarter. Montrose then got a nice kick return out to the 50. On the very next play, disaster struck again for Montrose as DB Brayden Rose intercepted a pass at the Riverside 13. 2 plays later, WR Carmello Barnett ran it in from 50 yards out to make it 14-0 Riverside with 8:54 left in the 1st quarter.
Montrose executed 7 plays on their next drive but couldn’t gain any momentum. The Vikings got a great punt return from Rose down to the Montrose 30, and 3 plays later it was Rose who hit Barnett on a nice screen pass that turned into a 13-yard TD. With 3:21 left in the 1st quarter, Riverside had a 20-0 lead.
Montrose then had a drive out to near midfield to start the 2nd quarter, but as the drive stalled there was another bad snap on the punt attempt and Riverside took over possession at the Meteor 25-yard line. Rose then hit Jackson on 2 straight plays, the second being a 12-yard TD to make it 27-0 Riverside with 10:57 left in the half. The Vikings got another nice punt return to start their next drive at the Meteor 21, and this drive was capped when WR Mitchell Muskey ran in a 5-yard TD to make it 34-0 Riverside with 6:11 left in the half.
The Vikings had 2 more scores to end the half, an 8-yard TD run by QB Charlie Anstett with 3:23 left in the half and then a 10-yard TD run by Rose with 6 seconds left. At halftime, the score was 47-0 Riverside which meant a running clock in the 2nd half.
Montrose got something going on their initial possession of the 2nd half. After a fumble recovery at the Riverside 15, the Meteors had nice runs by RB Cason Petrak, QB Weston Nabywaniec and WR Timothy David, who scored on a 5-yard run to make it 47-6. Montrose then executed an onside kick and recovered it, but any momentum they had was extinguished when Barnett intercepted a pass for the Vikings and ran it back 70 yards for a TD to make it 54-6 with 3:34 left int eh 3rd quarter.
The Vikings added one final score in the 4th quarter when WR Dion Ang scored on a 10-yard reception to make it 60-6 with 9:14 left in the game. Shortly thereafter, the game went final as there had been several injuries to Montrose players in the second half.
Riverside improved to 4-1 and will head up to face Susquehanna next Saturday. Montrose fell to 1-4 and will try to get back on track next week at home against Carbondale.
