Scranton Prep QB Louis Paris, who this year became the first player in school history (and the first player in District 2 since 2012) to throw for 1,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season, has announced his commitment to attend and play for Franklin & Marshall College.
An injury early in his team’s State Quarterfinal Playoff game against Northwestern Lehigh was later aggravated further and caused Paris to have to leave the game late in the 2nd quarter. He told me “There was no way I was getting carted off the field in that game”, and instead he made the slow journey to the locker room with his family by his side. This was a memorable moment for sure, but it also is truly a testament to the toughness and class of this young man whom I’ve had the privilege to cover and interview over the last 2 1/2 seasons.
His stats speak for themselves: 31-5 record as starting QB. 2,548 rushing yards and 43 rushing TD’s. 3,604 passing yards and 38 passing TD’s. This season, in his first year playing defense he led the Cavaliers with 7 sacks.
Even with all of that said, Louis insisted on giving a lot of the credit to his coaches and teammates. “I’ve been surrounded by a lot of good teammates and good people” he said, “and they deserve a lot of the credit for what I’ve been able to do in my career.” I asked him specifically about Head Coach Terry Gallagher: “Coach Terry is a very special person in my life, and especially as a coach. Even way back when I was the water boy he showed me respect and taught me a lot even at a young age, and we’ve built a relationship that will last a lifetime and I am forever grateful for that.” As I spoke to Paris for this interview he had just finished lifting and was waiting to get a ride home from, you guessed it, Coach Terry.
Whenever an athlete suffers a significant injury, the recruiting process can sometime take a turn in a different direction. In this case, what happened only solidified that Paris and his family had made the right decision. Paris said “The recruiting process was good. I had initially talked to a few Division 3 schools, and then with how well wrestling went for me last year I had a few Division 1 schools reach out. At the end of the day though, Franklin & Marshall was the best fit for me and they want me to play QB and they weren’t concerned about my knee so that meant a lot to me.”

As for the future, it is certainly bright for Louis Paris. Toughness, character and leadership have consistently been on display on and off the field and will no doubt continue as he moves forward to play for the Diplomats. For me, it has been a privilege and an honor to watch and interview this young man and I wish him nothing but the best in the future.
Louis, go get it!!
