Last year up at Delaware Valley, Scranton Prep withstood a late rally and hung on to win 27-24. This game started out totally in favor of the Warriors as the Cavaliers had some miscues that led to 3 turnovers and a Delaware Valley lead at halftime.
It’s funny how things can change very quickly in the second half of a game.
Delaware Valley got a quick 2nd half TD to go up 31-7 before Scranton Prep ripped off 42 unanswered points and then held off a late Delaware Valley comeback of their own. The Cavaliers won it 49-44 in a wild and crazy game at Dunmore Veterans Memorial Stadium.
QB Will McPartland, in his first game back from injury, scored 5 rushing TD’s and passed for the other 2 scores to account for all 7 of Prep’s scores on the night. Delaware Valley QB Colin McGarvey ran for 2 scores and threw 2 TD’s to WR Trey Newton. Warrior RB Mike Iuzzolino had 2 long TD runs in the game.
Scranton Prep scored first on a McPartland keeper, but the Warriors answered quickly on Iuzzolino’s first TD run. It was all Delaware Valley after that in the first half as Prep committed 3 turnovers that allowed the Warriors to take a 24-7 lead at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Delaware Valley took the 2nd half kick and on that drive Iuzzolino hit on a 72-yard TD run to make it 31-7 Delaware Valley. It was then that the Cavaliers exploded, with McPartland carrying the team on his back as they executed 6 straight scoring drives while Delaware Valley committed 3 turnovers of their own and it was the Cavaliers who had a 49-31 lead with 2:36 left in the game.
Delaware Valley answered when McGarvey hit Newton for a score, and then a successful onside kick allowed McGarvey to hit Newton again to make it 49-44. The 2-point conversion failed, and with only 11 seconds left it was time for another onside kick. Prep was ready, recovered the kick and kneeled it out for the huge comeback victory.
Scranton Prep got in the win column and now stands at 1-3, and they will face Scranton next Friday at home. Delaware Valley fell to 0-4 and will look to get back on track next week at Wallenpaupack.
