The J-Man’s View of District 2: “Almost there”…..and “It’s a trap!”

There’s the scene in Star Wars Episode IV where the X-Wings are making their first run to try to destroy the Death Star. The Red Leader keeps saying “almost there” as all of the escorts around him are getting picked off by Darth Vader. How is it that I immediately thought of this when I starting coming up with the title for this week’s article? Then there’s the infamous “It’s a trap!!” (Yes, I know, you heard that in Admiral Ackbar’s voice!). Ok, ok….yes, this is a football column. And now you’re saying to yourself “Where is he going with this?”
Well, glad you asked!! Last night, we did the The State of PA Football show at Nonno’s Pizza in Moosic (awesome place, go check it out!) and we had the privilege of hosting coaches and players from Wyoming Area, Riverside and Pittston Area. We had a blast! As we were closing out the show, Alex asked if any of this week’s games were possibly “trap games”. Great question. It got me thinking about some of the questions we asked of the teams and coaches as they approach each week, and whether or not they look ahead. We got some interesting answers for sure….check out the show at the link above and let me know your thoughts!
The outlook from up on the mountain: Here’s a look at the District 2 standings, by classification
Class 1A (4 teams qualify for playoffs, sub-region with District 11)
- Lackawanna Trail (7-1) D2
- Tri-Valley (6-2) D11
- Marian Catholic (5-3) D11
- Nativity BVM (4-4) D11
- Holy Cross (3-5) D2
- Old Forge (2-6) D2
Class 2A (4 teams qualify for playoffs)
- Lakeland (7-1)
- Riverside (7-1)
- Dunmore (5-3)
- Holy Redeemer (1-7)
- Susquehanna (0-8)
Class 3A (4 teams qualify for playoffs)
- Berwick (8-0)
- Wyoming Area (7-1)
- Scranton Prep (4-4)
- Lake-Lehman (4-4)
- Hanover Area (4-4)
- Mid Valley (3-5)
- Carbondale (4-4)
- Tunkhannock (3-5)
- Western Wayne (2-6)
- Montrose (2-6)
- Comments: This was a change that was announced this past weekend, as Class 3A now only has 4 teams qualifying for playoffs. Additionally, the reason teams are ranked as they are even with better or equal records is due to the formula that takes OWP (opponent winning percentage) into account as well. That formula determines who ultimately qualifies for the playoffs.
Class 4A (4 teams qualify for playoffs)
- North Pocono (8-0)
- Valley View (4-4)
- Dallas (3-5)
- Crestwood (4-4)
- Wallenpaupack (3-5)
- Honesdale (3-5)
- Nanticoke (0-8)
- Comments: as discussed in 3A above, and as applies to all classifications, OWP plays a factor. In the case of Dallas, they have the toughest schedule of any team in D2 according to the ratings and after last week’s win over Crestwood they maintain the 3rd spot here.
Class 5A (4 teams qualify for playoffs)
- Pittston Area (7-1)
- Abington Heights (6-2)
- Delaware Valley (4-4)
- Wyoming Valley West (1-5)
- West Scranton (2-6)
- Comments: Wyoming Valley West has a significant OWP advantage and thus the higher ranking at this point
Class 6A (All 4 teams qualify for playoffs, sub-region with District 4)
- Wilkes-Barre (5-3)
- Williamsport (4-4) D4
- Scranton (2-6)
- Hazleton (1-7)
