This week, prior to next week’s “Playoff Preview”, I’m going to do a preview of several of the rivalry games we have this week that are being covered by PFN staff in District 2. Let’s get after it!
The outlook from up on the mountain: Here’s a look at some of this week’s rivalry games.
Pittston Area (8-1) at Wyoming Area (8-1): probably the grandaddy of all the rivalries in D2, it’s the Patriots invading the Warriors home turf. This one always has a big walk-up crowd, regardless of weather. Why not, right? These guys have been pounding on each other for years! This edition features an especially big matchup with both teams having only 1 loss on the season. Pittston Area features something new seemingly every week, with WR Lucas LoPresto and FB Brody Spindler making some huge noise this season. On the Wyoming Area side, WR Luke Kopetchny and RB Trustin Johnson are making noise as well. The Lines are stout, with PA’s Gunnar Zaledonis and WA’s Max Getzie leading some strong units. This game should be a banger!! OUTLOOK: I don’t know if we’ll be hearing that bell tomorrow night….but who knows?
Lake-Lehman (4-5) at Dallas (4-5): if PA/WA isn’t the grandaddy of all rivalries, this one is for sure. Every year, it does not matter what the records are: these teams go at it! The Old Shoe is at stake, and that makes it personal every time. Lehman RB Jaydon Skipalis is tough, and the Black Knights need this game badly in order to keep any playoff hopes alive. Dallas has the “Geskey connection“, QB Talyn and WR Logan along with WR Tyce Mason (only a sophomore) and the Mounts are seemingly past their early season struggles against the toughest schedule in District 2. Anyone who has ever seen this game knows that anything can happen, so it should be a great one. OUTLOOK: I think we will be hearing that cannon, a lot.
Nanticoke (0-9) at Hanover Area (5-4): this game, “the San Souci Struggle” as it’s called now, has had a great history and carried a lot of weight for both teams. Unfortunately, recent history for this one has been lopsided with the Trojans getting the better of the the Hawkeyes in the last few years EXCEPT for last year when Hanover got a 16-14 win. This year, we find 2 teams going in different directions as their records would indicate. Hanover QB Logan Richardson, still only a sophomore, is growing every game and RB Dewayne Downey is having a good season. Nanticoke has seen better days and is hoping to salvage something at the end of what has been a very trying season. OUTLOOK: Looking very promising for the home team.
Where I am headed Thursday 10/23: I can’t turn down Thursday Night Lights this late in the season, so I will be heading up to Pen-Fed Field as Delaware Valley visits Scranton.
Where we are headed Friday 10/24: Rapidly turning into one of my favorite games to cover every year, it’s a huge one in Taylor. Sherryl and I will be on hand as the LFC Division 3 title is up for grabs as 9-1 Lackawanna Trail visits 9-1 Riverside. Just wow!!!
