Fall is finally here! And what I mean is, the leaves and that crisp chill in the air that means one thing: high school football! As I’ve travelled around the state, and specifically in District 2, there have definitely been some standout places to see a game, and some that really seem to pop out once the leaves start to turn and fall. I spoke with the more photographically-focused Samuel, my wife and PFN Staff Photographer Sherryl, and we came up with these as some of our favorites. What are some of yours? Be sure to DM me or email me (contact info at the bottom) and let me know!
The outlook from up on the mountain: Here’s a look at some of our favorite spots to cover a game in District 2, by category
- The “Especially Friendly for us in the Media” sites
- Dunmore Veterans Memorial Stadium: easy access from the highways, friendly staff, plenty of sideline space to move around and the fact that 2 teams call this home (Dunmore and Scranton Prep) definitely makes the Dunmore Vet one of our favorites.
- Wolfpack Stadium: home of the Wilkes-Barre Wolfpack, this modern stadium has tons of parking, plenty of sideline space and plenty of seating. This one is a banger for sure!
- Pen-Fed Field: another venue with easy access from the roadways and plenty of sideline space and tons of seating, this place is home to Scranton and West Scranton.
- The “Best for Fall Foliage” sites
- Lions Pride Stadium: sure, it is a bit of a drive but it is well worth it! Home of Lackawanna Trail, this venue has trees surrounding the entire visitors side and running up the hill behind the one end zone. Absolutely fabulous!
- Mountaineer Stadium: another great place to take in fall sports, Dallas really has a great setup here. Trees behind the visitor stands and all the way around the far end zone as well, plus the sunsets here are spectacular!
- Sharkey-Rosetti Complex: Home of Western Wayne. Great parking, nice walk-up to the actual stadium and tons of sideline room and seating for all. Wayne County is scenic any time of the year, but fall especially brings it out. Get up there and see the Wildcats!
- The “Best of Everything” sites
- Wallenpaupack Stadium: this place has it all. I mean, it’s right on Lake Wallenpaupack. The facility is immaculate, the staff and school employees are amazing and the field is terrific. While there are only stands on one side of the field (the lake is on the visiting team’s side), the home fans are gracious to all who come. One other cool thing: Wallenpaupack loves their music program and it’s obvious, as there are a set of stands in each end zone….for the bands!! Angled just the right way so that both bands can play toward the field and stands at the same time, it’s an amazing game night experience.
- Warrior Stadium: ok, so I think this one is great any time of year due it’s location but especially grand in the fall. Home of the Delaware Valley Warriors. The view? Breathtaking. If you stand at the far end of the stadium you are right on the Delaware River, and as you look to the other end? I’ll just leave this here:
- Honorable Mention
- Old Forge Veterans Memorial Stadium: what it does not have in sideline space (answer: NONE) it makes for in fan amenities (multiple concession stands) and the atmosphere is amazing. Practically the whole town walks up to a game here!
- William Emminger Field: if they had lights full time, and yard markers on the field, I bet a lot more folks would head up there to see Susquehanna play. Beautiful country out there.
- Bennett/Mullen Field: Montrose is a beautiful and historic town, and the stadium is a pleasant surprise. Up on the hill with a terrific view of the western skyline, great sunsets are plentiful here:
Where we are headed Friday 10/10: Sherryl and I decided to stay a little closer to home this week as we head over to Edward Edwards Stadium as 6-1 Wyoming Area visits 4-3 Lake-Lehman in a possible playoff preview in Class 3A.
