At the end of Wilkes-Barre’s 48-42 OT win against Stroudsburg last week, Coach Ciro Cinti said the defense did not play well except for the last 4 plays (4 straight stops in OT). This week, however, was a different story. Wilkes-Barre slugged it out with Valley View all night but it was the Wolfpack defense that was the difference in the 16-14 win up at John Henzes Veterans Memorial Stadium.
QB Jake Howe put in another strong performance with key passes mixed with key QB runs to lead the Wilkes-Barre offense, while the defense got a fumble recovery deep in their own territory to stop one drive and got a huge late-game stop on a 4th-and-1 inside their own 15 as Valley View was driving for the go ahead score.
Wilkes-Barre scored first when WR Kevon Creech ran it in from 3 yards out to give the Wolfpack an early 7-0 lead with 2:00 left in the 1st quarter. Valley View answered on their next drive when QB Caleb Brown hit WR Gabe Davis for a big 37-yard catch and run for the score to tie the game at 7 with 10:29 left in the 2nd quarter.
The Wolfpack then answered immediately as QB Jake Howe had several nice passes on the drive, including a fade route to WR Jordan Kieselowsky in the right corner of the end zone from 10 yards out for the score that gave Wilkes-Barre a 13-7 lead. Valley View then returned the favor on their next drive as RB Brady Bachman had a strong 8-yard run to paydirt with 6:57 left in the half that gave the Cougars a 14-13 lead.
The 3rd quarter was a slugfest as both teams had several opportunities to gain yardage but were ultimately stymied by the defenses. As the 4th quarter began Howe ripped off 2 nice runs to get the Wolfpack down to the Cougar 3-yard line, but the drive stalled. Wilkes-Barre K Jaedyn Sanchez, who missed an extra-point earlier, came out and drilled a 20-yard go ahead field goal to give the Wolfpack a 16-14 lead with 7:03 left in the game.
Valley View then took the ball and had a nice sustained drive. With under 5 minutes to go and the Cougars facing 4th down, WR Mike Shemonski appeared to be stopped short of the line to gain but a measurement gave Valley View new life. The Cougars continued to drive with under 2 minutes remaining, and on a 4th-and-1 at the Wilkes-Barre 15 it was RB Tyler Muchal who took the handoff and was met immediately by the Wolfpack defense. Another measurement ensued, and the Cougars came up short which effectively ended the game and gave Wilkes-Barre a 16-14 victory.
Valley View will look to get back in the win column next week at Abington Heights, while Wilkes-Barre looks to continue their momentum as they head home to face Dallas.
