Falling short to South Park last year, Seton LaSalle is hungry for a WPIAL Class 2A Championship victory this Saturday at Acrisure Stadium. The only thing in their way is No. 3 Steel Valley, who has blown through the playoff bracket, winning by a margin of at least 27 points each game.
No. 1 Seton LaSalle (11-1) and Steel Valley (9-3) are both familiar with the atmosphere at Acrisure, playing in the 2A Championship in the last two years. Despite this, the Rebels’ last victory was in 2004, while Steel Valley’s was in 2022.
Steel Valley will rely on senior Da’Ron Barksdale in its rushing game. The Pitt recruit is the top rusher in Class 2A. The Ironmen boast a strong defense, including DB Asad Dye, recording five interceptions, and Rayvon Price and Amir Randall on the defensive line.
Steel Valley dominated through the bracket, defeating Ellwood City 42-6 in the first round, then knocking out No. 2 Western Beaver 34-7 in the semifinals.
Seton LaSalle will utilize sophomore running back Kymarr Freeman. Freeman holds second in rushing in Class 2A, under Barksdale. Another sophomore, Kia Jones Jr., will be a key player for the Rebels. Jones, the team’s first-year quarterback, has already thrown over 1,000 yards this season.
The Rebels already battled through the season after losing Khalil Taylor and Anthony Smith as transfers. Monmouth-commit Aaron Lorittis has been a huge help in offsetting these losses, scoring twice in the first round and again against Washington in the semifinals.
The Rebels have not lost a single game since their season-opener against North Catholic. Steel Valley is on a 5-game win streak.
The teams will meet at 2 p.m. on Nov. 22 at Acrisure Stadium.
