Yesterday I made the almost four-hour drive from Columbus, Ohio, to Meadville, Pennsylvania, to take in my first D-10 All-Star Classic. This was also my first trip to Frank B. Fuhrer Field, the home of the Allegheny Gators. Though the game was very one-sided, I still enjoyed the overall experience as I was on the field, not a place I often venture to.
I want to thank Shane Lux for allowing me to use his work from the game, along with Deacon Blues for three of his pictures.
The scoring got started WITH Ben Moore’s (McDowell) finding Kyle Birkmire (General McLane) to make this a 7-0 game after the point-after-kick from Ben Campbell (Northwestern) with 7:04 remaining in the opening quarter.
We would have a 14-0 game after Artis Simmons (McDowell) eased in from 6-yards out, with 6:20 left in the half. The offensive line was able to dominate on this play, making the score as easy as it could have been.
A 29-yard field goal from Campbell made it a 17-0 game at the 1:49 left in the half. The South has accumulated 15 yards of offense in the half, as the North’s defense looked as good as a defense could with the short time they had been together.
Khalon Simmons-McCoy (Meadville) used some nice blocking, some nasty moves, and speed to gallop 43 yards, making this a 23-0 game.
Christian Santiago (McDowell) powered in from a yard out to make this a 30-0 game with 2:59 left in the third. As well as the North played, you would have thought they had been together for a whole season, while the South looked like they had just thrown on some pads and become a team.
The final score came on a Simmons-McCoy 2-yard run with 10:05 left in the contest. The game would be stopped with a little under 4 minutes to play due to a large fight as tempers rose as the score grew wider and wider.
