The 2020 Pennsylvania high school football season officially kicked off Friday night with a Mountain League matchup between the Clearfield Bison and the Penns Valley Rams. The Bison used a three-headed attack that included Junior quarterback Oliver Billotte to come out of Penns Valley with a 27-0 victory. Billotte was just one of the key components to the Bison victory, he finished with over 200 yards of total offense and contributed to every Bison touchdown. The other two main contributors were Senior Jake Lezzer who finished with 8 catches and 105 yards and Junior Karson Kline finished the game with 5 catches for 51 yards and two touchdowns. The Penns Valley Rams looked to keep the momentum rolling from last season after finishing with a regular-season record of 9-1 and making it to the second round of the district six playoffs. However, the Rams struggled to find a groove Friday night.

The game’s first score came with 6:40 to go in the first quarter when Billotte took a quarterback sneak one yard into the endzone. The point-after attempt was good making the Bison lead 7-0. The Rams offense came back onto the field and used a couple of Bison penalties to advance the ball. Billotte also plays defensive end and forced a sack stopping the following Rams drive. Both teams struggled to find any offense the rest of the quarter. Near the end of the second quarter, the Bison got the ball off a Ram punt and wasted no time driving the ball down the field using 9 plays and capped off the drive with a seven-yard rush by Billotte. The point after was good making the score 14-0 Clearfield with 5:07 left in the second quarter. The following kickoff, Rams Senior receiver Alex Hammer took the kick 89 yards to the end zone but ended up fumbling the ball out of the back of the endzone giving the Bison the ball back at their 20-yard line. Again Clearfield drove down the field and with seven seconds to go in the half Billotte found Kline for an 11-yard touchdown. The point after was good making the halftime score 21-0 Clearfield.

The second half began and neither team could find a groove offensively. The third quarter was a defensive game in which neither teams found the red zone. There was also a scoreboard malfunction in which the clock was not shown on the scoreboard and time was kept on the field by one of the officials. The only score to come out of the second half was Billotte’s fourth and final score when he found Kline again this time from nine yards out. The kick was blocked by the Penns Valley defense making the score 27-0 Bison. The Penns Valley Rams will face Philipsburg-Osceola next Friday. Philipsburg is coming off a 35-20 victory over Huntingdon. The Clearfield Bison will face Tyrone next Thursday the 17th. Tyrone is also coming off a victory against Bellefonte with a score of 21-13.
