Five weeks of the 2025 season have come and gone, and there’s plenty to talk about so far around District 4! We’ve had plenty of parity so far, some teams emerging after years of disappointment, some teams falling short of expectations, and some teams doing a little in between. So if you haven’t been paying attention up to this point, or you just want a recap of everything, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into everything you need to know about the first half of 2025 season in District 4.

Line Mountain is always an interesting team to judge, since they play in the Midd-Penn Conference and basically have a District 3 schedule. Because of this they don’t play any common opponents that the rest of the teams their district play. This year is no different but the Eagles are absolutely deserving of the record they have and their place in the standings, getting some big time victories over teams like Newport, Juniata, and Upper Dauphin this past week. They’re going to have a big test this week against Steelton-Highspire, and there is a chance they lose a game down the stretch but they are primed to finish near the top of the class and to make some noise in the playoffs.
Remaining schedule
vs Steelton-Highspire (3-1)

@ James Buchanan (2-3)
vs Camp Hill (0-5)
@ Susquenita (1-4)
Current Record: 4-1
Head Coach: Chris Persing
For the decade-long tenure of head coach Sean Tetreault, the Indians were seemingly always in playoff contention. Now they’ve got Chris Persing leading the way and he’s got Muncy in the same place they were last season, 4-1 with their only loss being to Warrior Run. They’re schedule gets significantly tougher the rest of the way, including a handful of 4-1 squads. We’ll see if Persing can keep his Indians rolling in the second half of the season the way they were in the first half.

vs South Williamsport (2-3)
@ Athens (4-1)

Current Record: 4-1
Head Coach: Joel Knoebel
Montgomery is another team that enters this season under new leadership, with Joel Knoebel leading the way after a two year tenure from Cory Tice that included a 7-4 finish last season. Knoebel has the Red Raiders performing even better than they were a season ago, improving from 3-2 to 4-1. They’ve had a very favorable schedule so far, but they’ve handled those teams very well, including 56-0 and 58-0 blowouts over Sayre and Canton. Their biggest game of the year is coming up this week, heading on the road to face 4-1 Muncy. We’ll see how the Red Raiders can perform against the Indians this season after being handled by them at home a year ago.

Head Coach: Jim Smith
For the second straight year, head coach Jim Smith has the Troy Trojans looking like a state title contender. Besides a week 2 loss to the 2023 New York state champion Waverly Wolverines, the Trojans have cruised through their schedule so far winning every game by at least 18 points. Obviously the expectation the last two years has been a state championship, and they look to be on their way to a second straight title, currently sitting atop the 2A state rankings.

Head Coach: Jim Roth
Coming off of 7 consecutive state titles from 2017-2023, last season was a major disappointment, finishing with only a 7-5 record and being eliminated in the District 4 semifinals by the eventual state champion Troy Trojans. After being handed an expected loss by Wyomissing in the opening week, this team has been rolling, winning four games in a row all by 30 or more points. Brayden Andrews and Grady Garcia have been a force on offense, each with 5 rushing touchdowns through the first half of the season, and they will likely be the offensive focal point the rest of the way as the Tigers will enter their toughest 3 game stretch of the season in weeks 7-9.
Remaining schedule
vs Danville (2-3)
@ Mifflinburg (4-1)
@ Montoursville (4-1)
vs Bloomsburg (4-1)
@ Shikellamy (3-2)
Current Record: 4-1
Head Coach: Derrick Zechman
For the second straight year, Warrior Run looks like a strong contender in 2A. The Defenders have had a very balanced attack on offense, with senior quarterback James Keifer having a very solid year through the air, and junior running back Denyn Beachel currently being sixth in the district in rushing yards. They opened up the season with back to back victories over Muncy and Montgomery, both who currently sit at 4-1. Their only loss so far has come at the hands of Bloomsburg, being a 42-28 upset at home in week 4. Derrick Zechman’s squad has a very favorable schedule the rest of the way, their only real test being a road game against Loyalsock in week 7. The Defenders hope to find themselves back in the playoffs and maybe this time around, make a run for the district title and beyond.
Remaining schedule

@ Loyalsock (3-2)

vs Central Columbia (0-5)
@ Milton (1-4)
The Pretenders
Current Record: 4-1
Head Coach: Jed Wright
The Panthers are a team that if you just looked at them by the numbers, they will fool you. On the surface they are a 4-1 team whose only loss is to another 4-1 team in the Athens Wildcats. Once you dig deeper though you’ll find why this team isn’t considered a contender. Their first four games were all victories, however the combined records of those four teams is 2-16, and on top of that three of those victories were by only 10 points or less. The one loss they have is to Athens, the only decent team they’ve played so far, and the game was a 54-13 blowout at home. Their remaining schedule is one of the toughest in all of District 4, including road trips to Warrior Run and Troy, and a home date against Muncy, all of whom blew the Panthers out last season. There is a very real chance that North Penn-Mansfield doesn’t win another game this season, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Head Coach: Mike Kogut
After starting 1-4 last season, Bloomsburg won 4 out of their last 5 games to make it to the playoffs. This year they’ve completely flipped the script, starting 4-1 for the first time since 2012, their lone loss being by 9 points to Loyalsock this past week. Mike Kogut has done a very impressive job turning this team around to levels of competitiveness we haven’t seen from the Panthers in quite some time, which has included a 42-28 upset victory over Warrior Run. They have a very talented quarterback leading the charge in senior Wyatt Brosious, who currently leads all of District 4 in passing yards this season and is also top 10 in rushing yards. This is going to be a very fun team to watch down the stretch and is one that could give the top seeds a run for their money.

vs Shikellamy (3-2)
@ Southern Columbia (4-1)

Head Coach: Justin Van Fleet
If it wasn’t for their victory this past week, the Lancers would be sitting at 2-3 with their only wins being against a 2-3 Hughesville squad and a 1-4 Midd-West squad, as well as blowout losses to Southern Columbia and Mifflinburg in 3A. Going into Bloomsburg and upsetting the Panthers 32-23 has brought this Lancers team back into contention watch. As surprising as that victory over Bloomsburg was to many, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Loyalsock is still in playoff contention, as they have been every season that Justin Van Fleet has been in charge of this team. They have some very tough matchups coming up, but if the Lancers can win one or two of those games, they will absolutely be a team to watch when the playoffs roll around.

WOW, how about that for a turn around! After starting the season 0-5 last season, the Wildcats have pulled almost a complete 180 this season, beginning 4-1. Their only real concern was their blowout loss last week, however it was on the road against a much bigger school, that being a 5A powerhouse in Hollidaysburg, and Mifflinburg was very much in the game for the entirety of the first half. Other than the loss to Hollidaysburg, this Wildcats offense has been clicking on all cylinders, averaging 43 points per game, as well as the defense allowing just 13 and a half points per game. With senior quarterback Chad Martin leading the way, along with many other offensive weapons like Landon Moser, Landen Murray, and Jaxon Griffith, this is definitely one of the scariest teams in 3A and one that is ready to make some noise in the postseason.

Head Coach: Joe Hanna
This is a team that last season we qualified as a spoiler, however this season it feels like this is a team that is ready to make that leap. So far this team has dominated every team they’ve played, except for fellow 3A contender Mifflinburg, whom they were blown out by at home in week 4. That is the only major concern for Joe Hanna’s Warriors, who currently sit at 4-1 behind the strong two headed monster in their backfield, being Christian Banks and Hayden Harvey. Their biggest test down the stretch is coming in week 8 when they welcome in the Southern Columbia Tigers, a team that the Warriors lost to by a mere 3 points last season.

The last few seasons, Danville has been running the table in District 4, winning the last five district titles dating back to 2020. However, this season has been a major step down for the Ironmen, starting 2-3 which is their worst start to a season since 2015. This isn’t a case where they are losing to teams they shouldn’t be losing to though, as their three losses have been against teams with a combined record of 12-3. Carl Majer has done what he can with pieces that he has this season, and we’ll be able to see if the Ironmen can keep their stride when they face teams such as Southern Columbia and Loyalsock, however this year is likely going to end in a first or second round exit for Danville.

@ Mount Carmel (1-4)

vs Shikellamy (3-2)
@ Selinsgrove (1-4)

Head Coach: John Darrah
Talk about a team that has shocked EVERYONE, and definitely not in a good way. This Red Tornadoes team is without a doubt the worst one we’ve seen under head coach John Darrah since he took over in 2015. Excluding their 48-0 victory over 0-5 Central Columbia, Mount Carmel has averaged only 14 points a game on offense and have allowed almost 47 points a game on defense. This team will still likely be in the playoffs come October as I can easily see 3 or 4 wins in the second half of the season, but this is not a team that will be making any noise in the playoffs this year.

Three years ago, Marc Persing began building a very talented Indians squad, and it has certainly showed the past two years. Shamokin is fresh off their first district title since 2003 and it was quite a shock to many when they didn’t make it far past that after being upset at home by Juniata last year. This year the Indians somehow look even better than they did a year ago, their biggest win so far coming against Jersey Shore in a 43-42 double overtime thriller. With junior quarterback Logan Steele and senior running back Zakeem Clinton leading the way again, as well as a favorable schedule the rest of the way, this Shamokin squad that returned much of its talent from last year is primed to make another run at the state title come November.

Since Tom Gravish took over in 2012, the Bulldogs have seemingly always been in the mix come November, and this year is no different. With stellar offensive leadership by sophomore quarterback Nolen Pauling and senior running back Bo Sechrist, the Bulldogs have once again been rolling, averaging almost 42 points a game including 49-6 and 42-14 blowouts over Selinsgrove and Shikellamy. The Bulldogs only blemish to this point has been their road loss to Shamokin, a game in which they had a 21-7 lead at the half and lost 43-42 in double overtime. We’re likely destined to have a Jersey Shore vs Shamokin district title game for the second straight year and it’ll be interesting to see if Jersey Shore can finally pull through after losing the last three matchups against the Indians by a combined 4 points.

Head Coach: Mike Hoover
The Braves are a team that have been sitting near the bottom of the standings for the past 7 years, but under their first season with Mike Hoover leading the way, it seems like Shikellamy might finally be heading in the right direction, sitting at 3-2 at the halfway point of the season. Now is this a team that is going to make noise when the playoffs roll around? No, as this was already proved in their two losses this season which have been blowouts by the two of the teams sitting above them in the standings, that being Shamokin and Jersey Shore. However the Braves can already mark this season a success, tripling their win total from a year ago only halfway through the season. Looking at the teams that remain on their schedule, Shikellamy could absolutely find themselves near .500 or even above that mark at the end of the year.

Head Coach: Shawn Bradley
After two relatively underwhelming seasons in 2023 and 2024, are the Wildcats emerging from the shadows again? They have had a very favorable schedule so far this year and they definitely will the rest of the way, however this is a team that went punch for punch with the defending state champion Troy Trojans in week 3 and have blown out every other team they’ve faced. Would they be able to put up a fight with the top 4A seeds around the state? Maybe not, but this is a sneaky good squad that could definitely make some noise in the district playoffs against the Shamokin and Jersey Shore teams that currently sit at the top.

The Millionares are the only 6A team in District 4, however their schedule is filled with District 2 opponents. So far they’ve beaten all the teams in front of them except for road loss to the Shikellamy Braves. Last season, Williamsport sat at the exact same mark at the halfway point and finished out the regular season by losing four out of their last five games. This season there’s a very real chance they do that again as their remaining schedule is an absolute gauntlet, including three 5-0 powerhouses, 4-1 Jersey Shore, and a strong District 2 school in Wilkes-Barre Area.
